My truck is going in for minor surgery Monday.

I'm losing the stocker and putting in a free flow muffler. I did a search and came up with a few of you that have done the same thing.

Are you guys still happy with your choice in the Magna-Flow?

I'm worried about the dreaded drone that can be all to common after such a modification. I know because my 99 suffered greatly from this.

Any feedback would be great! Thanks:D

Yep, still happy with my Magnaflow, believe part # was 17223 or something like that. Did however go with the full 4" treatment, mine had the exhaust drone with the stock set up.

MMeier thanks for the reply, you state that your stock exhaust had drone. Does your aftermarket system have any drone?

No, drone was eliminated with this set up, and just a shade louder overall, EGT's also fell approximately 150* in all conditions!!

RankRam, I am also very happy with my Magnaflow system, it has the sound of a healthy, heavy duty truck. I have not experienced any drone. I have a Jake Brake installed and when the brake is engaged and you down shift and get the RPM's up, the Cummins produces a a real nice pleasant rap. If you grew up in the 60's and early 70's with big block Chevy, Ford or Dodge engines, this is about as close to that sound as you can get. Best 150 bucks that I have spent recently.

I'm not going full 4", just the muff will be installed. I have guages and I'm not sure I will put a box on so I think I'm safe as far as egt's are concerned.

3. 5" to the muff and 4" on out should be safe egt's even with an EZ.

I will post results Monday, thanks for all your help.

Update!!!

I just got back from Reno with the new Magna-flow.

I'm very pleased with the mod, it's the best 230 bucks I've spent.

The sound is very mellow at idle but when you stomp it you get the great Cummins sound that we all know and love.

In cab sound is just a little more than stock at both highway and around town.

Thanks again for the advice. Oo.

Mine has an annoying "howl" with the stock setup. I'm looking at swapping for an aftermarket muffler. (want growl not howl)

How much is the Magna Flow? Is it a straight through design?

My cousin just put a 4" straight through muffler on his and gained mpg and better power and throttle response. I tried it yesterday and you can punch the throttle in neutral and it jumps up just like my 12 valve did - no lag at all. With mine, I can open the throttle and let off quickly and the lag is so much it hardly increases engine speed at all in such short time.

His muffler is about a foot long and cost about $65 from the Mack dealer. No drone problem he says.

RankRam,

How about a 1. 5 week update! Any mileage observations? Sound getting even better? Where in Reno did you get the muffler installed? I was there last weekend and it was 55 degrees, then on the way out past Fernley the temp dropped 20 degrees in about a mile and then was 5 by the time I got back to Elko.

Hi Stieger! I just got back from a run to Utah (1550 miles) and I am very pleased with the fuel mileage increase. I'm positive that I'm getting at least 1. 5 to 2. 0 mpg more with this modification as well as lower EGT's. I use hwy 50 east to Utah and before the mod I would get 18 mpg if I behaved (70mph to 75mph). On this trip I fueled in Carson and drove straight through to Nephi Ut. and got 20. 2! We stayed there for 2 days and came back the same route with the speed greatly increased, I took the truck up to redline three times at well over 100 mph and averaged 83 mph on the way home. When I topped off the truck we got 18. 2 so I would say the stock muff is a cork at best.

I have no regrets in my choice of losing the stocker and would do it again with out hesitation.

To answer your question: I had the muff swapped at Mr. Z's on 392 Wolverine Wy Sparks, Nv. Their phone # (775) 359-8788 Ask for Dylan.

He has worked on my 99 and now the 03 and his work is very good. They stand behind their work all work is guaranteed.

The price I paid was $230. 42 and this included a chrome tip. I think this is a good price for a quality product and great results.

Rankram - Thanks for the reply - I head to Reno about every 2 months so I'll check out that shop next time. Right now I'm spending way too much money on my jeep rebuild so I need to hold off on the truck stuff for a while (good thing for me Summit Racing in Sparks had a long order line last week!)

I also took your advice from a long while back and visited Carson Dodge for some warranty work about 5 months ago and they gave some awesome service. After the service I told one of my friends that has the new hemi about Carson Dodge and they fixed a warranty issue in 2 minutes a couple of weeks ago compared to nothing over numerous visits to the local dealer!

Glad I could help and yes they are very good, I feel lucky to have them so close.

I should mention Mr. Z's is not open on the weekend. Just a heads up. ;)
