I just installed the stock replacement electric lift pump on my 04. 5. It is the fp diesel kit ( # fp-4089602) from Genos. It has a inline filter that came with the kit. Does anyone know the filter part # and the change interval? I was thinking everytime the stock fuel filter was changed:confused:I tried to cross the number that was on it into napa prolink with no results.

Mike,

Unfortunately I can't answer your question, but I do have one for you. My lift pump died last night, leaving my wife stranded... I had the truck towed to the dealer, and they confirmed today that it was in fact the pump. They can't get the Carter pump, and wanted $200+ to install it if I bring the pump to them. So to make a long story short, I told them no thanks, and I'm going to swap it in their parking lot tomorrow night after I receive my new pump from Geno's via next day delivery.

So my question is this - what tools were required to do the swap? I don't have the truck here at my house, so I can't go out and look at it myself. I want to round up anything I'll need, and will take it with me tomorrow to do the swap there. Any helpful hints that you can offer would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Chris

Cummins Pre-Filter FF5079 3/8” INLINE STRAINER is the filter that is used with the GDP Walbro kits. Looks like the one in the Geno kit. . 27mu I believe. GDP recommends replacing once a year... . I just bought 4 off the net for $7 each.

I haven't even had a chance to read this issue of the magazine yet :-laf

Neither have I. :{ I'm out of town, so mine is waiting for me at home. :)

Look at it this way... If you print out the PDF file and take it with you, you won't have to get your magzine dirty! :-laf

I believe that FF5079 is a 120u mesh, not a cellulose filter... the wix equivalent is the 33270. It is for 3/8" line.

Its basically the inline equivalent of the FASS prefilter... just protects the pump.

I would guess you could get an easy year out of them... after seeing my FASS filters, I'd be more worried about rust through than plugging.

Ok been busy and havent been on in awhile. Thanks for the part number. I was surprised this question hadnt come up sooner. Mine should last a LONG time as I have pretty much delegated the truck to the garage now that I was forced to buy an escort to commute the 62 mile round trip to work. Filled the truck up for the first time in awhile yesterday. $$ 124 bucks to fill up. At least I will have clean, expensive fuel in my engine!

I assume it's there to protect the lift pump from trash and debris similar to the pre-filter screen used to protect the mechanical lift pumps used on the '94 to '98 12-valve engines.

I wonder if the use of a similar prefilter screen could have prevented many of the electric lift pump failures on '98. 5 to '04. 5 24-valve engines with electric lift pumps?

No... because the 98-02's had a synthetic membrane type filter at the pickup on the fuel module in the tank. The mesh was very fine... like silk. So any fuel that would reach this inline screen filter would have already been filtered by something probably better.

My 99 had a 30 micron pre-filter (and pre lift pump) water sep. It was a Stanadyne FM100 filter system. And I ran a Stanadyne 5 micron final filter after the lift pump, before the VP44.

Didn't make a difference to my frame relocated pump. The 2nd gen carter lift pump was junk, is junk, and always will be junk. I can't believe people still buy "relocate" kits and big line kits. There is nothing that can be done for those pumps. Any attempts to do so will result in a complete loss of money and time.

In my opinion... those who relocated these pumps never proved anything. Did they test for 100K miles and report back? Even if a truck or two did... I've seen many more in the stock location go over 100K miles. They ALL didn't fail.
