I want to put 285 75r-16 tires on my 96 and the 6. 5 in wheels are not recomended because of width. Are the 98-02 steel wheels any wider? Think 03s went to 17inch so thats out. seems aftermarket wheels are all the wrong offset. I want to stay with steel wheels that fit the truck and dont hang out the sides.

Anyone found steel wheels that are 7 or 7. 5 that fit ?

Hello,

For what its worth, I have run 285/75/16 BFG All Terrain tires on my stock 6. 5 wide factory chrome steel wheels for 40,000 miles with no trouble. They have worn even, I run 55psi in front and 45psi rear unless I tow or haul then I go up in psi on the rear.

When I first got the truck it had 245/75/16 and they looked very small, I asked the guys at the tire shop what is the largest tire they recommend and the reply was 285/75/16 on those dodge wheels.

I like the look and width(8")of the 03 wheels so when the 285/75/16's wear out I'm going to 285/70/17.

For the record, I'm not recommending anything, just telling my experience.

I don't think you will have any problem at all running 285's on stock steel wheels, there are a lot of trucks running that combo, I have 295/75/16's on mine and have seen several trucks with 305's. The wheels on my '99 are only 6. 5", I think the '00-'02 aluminum wheels are 7"

The stock aluminum wheels for 01-02 are 16x8. Not sure about pre-2001, but the stock wheels from my truck were 16x8 with 6+ inches of backspacing.

Thanks for the advice i may try 285s on the stock wheels. I am kinda nervous about loosing a bead out on the beach when we air down to 15 lbs with the camper on.

rims and tires

I work at a tire shop and have put on 285/75/16's on lots of trucks and they look great. hey make the truck huge :-laf For me personally, i put on 265/70/17's and chrome rims off of an 04, I got a good price on them (took them from my dad's 04) they look great, but you have to use the old lug nut covers. Tires are alot more expensive than 16's, but the 17's look so much better. One can buy some off of ebay for about 700 depending on what tires are on there. make sure you get the old caps hope this helps.
