Hey guys. New to the forum. Recently I got codes
P2563, P2262 and p226c. From what I read the turbo is probably gonna die in the near future. My truck has 154,000 miles and is deleted and tuned by double r . My question is if I got a aftermarket turbo would I have to buy a new Turner and tune to, since as far as I know no one does tunes for the mini maxx anymore or do I have aftermarket drop in turbo options to replace the original turbo that will work with the tune I'm running now?

What year truck and engine do you have? If it is third gen with the 6.7L Cummins Geno's Garage is now selling a Turbo ACTUATOR Electronics for the VGT that is on a 6.7L Cummins. I would contact Genos Garage to see if this will solve the issues with the VGT.

I believe that you can still use the existing tune on your truck as this is programmed into the ECM.

Here is the contact information for Geno's Garage: https://www.genosgarage.com/category/s?keyword=CM-ACT12C1 The Tech support phone number is 770-886-2500.

P.S. Geno's Garage is the site sponsor for TDR .com

It's a 2011 6.7. If I was going to replace the turbo I was wanting to get away from the vgt and do a 2nd gen swap on it but don't want to get into new tuner/tune as well to support a non vgt. Since the tune was written with the stock turbo I didn't know what a 2nd gen swap with a non vgt would do

It would not work.

Don, while i agree I don't think that's entirely true. I have been working with HPP tuning (now CTTuning) and when I did my swap from my factory VGT to my non vgt s465 turbo they told me that I could run the tuning for my factory turbo with my new turbo just fine. Which i did for about 6months and I never once had any issues. I only had my tunes changed to increase fueling and power with the new turbo.

Robert, If your worried about the tuning you could go with the Fleece VGT as its a direct bolt in and not have to change anything in the tuning as its an exact plug and play turbo to the factory unit.

My other advice to you is seriously think of what your truck does day to day? I drive a 2012 g56 2wd truck daily, tow fairly often on the weekends and during the week its an empty to and from work truck. I chose the s465 2.6 pull style turbo as it works really well for towing heavy and/or loaded in the truck bed. empty it has plenty of power but spool is WAY slower than the factory unit. I wish I would have chosen either an s467.7 or the 5blade s465 at the start as those can still be used to tow you just have to make changes to fueling in the tunes.

Robert,

with that out of the way i will say that the Stainless Diesel Kit i went with was fairly smooth and easy to install, I dont like that I have to have 3 rubber boots and 2 pipes just to connect from the turbo to the inter cooler. Seems a little lazy to me and just more to fail. Wherli fab has been used by a large number of my friends as they are a bit cheaper cost wise for the whole kit and the powder coating is pretty good.

Shop around and decide what you want to do. Theoretically i could have even gone with an S472 turbo but I didn't want the towing spool to be stupid slow.

I know a lot of you may or may not like the VGT's on the 6.7L engine. Why?
I for one like the VGT; especially the exhaust brake feature which I use about 95% of the time. The brake helps me in slowing down when I am in Tow Haul mode and pulling my heavy 5er. This way my trailer brakes and truck brakes will last longer.

My older son who is in to diesel engine modifications, has wanted me to ditch the VGT and go with a turbo set up for towing on my truck. But if I did that I would need to install a Jake Brake of some type which means extra $$. Why? I would need to pull the head and do a mill job on the head (127,000M) with a new head gasket plus heavier exhaust springs to work with the Jake Brake. I want a engine brake of some type when towing and the VGT gives me that!

Honestly I loved my vgt on my truck. I just got a better deal going to a non vgt turbo so I did. I also still have my factory brakes at 178k miles and plenty of life to go lol.

Now if I have to do it again I'll probably go back for the cheetah vgt style and sell this kit.

Okay,I went with a 2nd gen swap kit,Borg Warner S467/83 1.10. The old vgt was all sooted up. It was. Real pita but I was doing it solo,i kind of do miss the exhaust brake though. Does anyone do custom mcc tunes anymore? I'm running a drd tune but that was with the stock turbo. I hate to have to switch tuners when the mini maxx works just fine.

That I don't know. You could reach out to CTT TUNING formerly Hpp tuning and see if they do any of that or can help you with it.

Congrats on the new turbo and I hope it works out for you the way you want it!!!!
