I am toying around with putting DD2 or 3 in my truck I've been told that the 2's are driveable but I am wondering if the 3's would give me more and still be driveable. please see sig for my corrent setup.

I installed Bully Dog III's lately I'm stock except for the injectors and gauges. I don't find them any less driveable than stock, EGT's are a little higher than normal during light driving, don't tow much, but I think they will be manageable.

I have a comp sitting on the back seat, I will install that next, then the ME kit from geno's.

Big difference between stock and Bully III's, now the truck wants to get up and go all the way across RPM range. Smokes a little though (hehehe) but only if you put your foot down. I'm driving easy now to check mileage under the best conditions, its hard to keep the light pressure up, few more trips and I'll have the mileage #'s I want, then the Comp goes on, and the clutch goes out.

I wanted to do it right the first time (cheaper that way) so I figured about what I wanted for HP/TQ for me it was 400/???

so I built to that idea, I can always turn the comp off.

Herb, "redneckdr" is running DD3's on his rig with no fueling box- and real happy about it.

I went with the "comp" first so I didn't have to run a boost fooler and then sell it. I'm planning 3's and a turbo after my clutch.

I have never owned 2's but I have had 1's and 3's. The 3's are every bit as driveable as the 1's were, only better.

dd3's/ stock

If I do put DD3's in my truck, will they make my stock turbo spool up quicker? I think they will, but am I incorrect in my assumptions?

They will spool it marginally quicker, BUT at the expense of smoke. 3's will smoke even without a box if you nail it at low/no boost.

let me ask a dumb q...

What happens if you run the big injectors like the DD3s on an otherwise stock truck? I know that it "defuels" over 20 psi of boost, but what does that do other than just reduce a little power? Does it cause smoke?

I would love to turn up the wick on my truck, but I don't want to make it a smoke monster. I also don't want to waste all the $$ on the incremental stuff.

Could I get away with DD3s on a stock truck if I didn't mind the defueling? Is the defueling bad for the truck??

Finally, does a bigger injector work the VP44 harder? How does that compare to what a box would do??

Sorry to hijack a thread, but I am relatively new and curious... .

The 3's will likely set an overboost code. EGT will be too high to tow without a boost module too. You NEED a boost module to run stage 3's.

Hohn, you need to add air when you add the dd3's. You do this by raising boost. If you do not add the air,you will have black smoke that wont clear up once on boost, and more importantly High EGT's,you wont be able to stay in the throttle without it getting too hot.

I'm curious too, Hohn; I also have an ETH/DEE and am weighing [big injectors] vs. [EZ + 275RVs].

The boxes out there add duration to the injection cycle to add fuel, there is no other way. So yes a box makes the pump work harder. Injectors add more fuel to the cylinder in the commanded injection cycle due to larger orifices and/or fuel sacs. The injectors do not make the pump work harder.

With all of that said the EZ or the VA or a similar box is not going to tax your pump enough to even consider, the wire tap boxes are another story. They will put a load on the pump that is considerable. If your injection pump dies with an EZ or the like on it the pump would have died anyway.

The DD3's if driven smoothly make no smoke or very little smoke. If you nail it at low boost it will smoke until the boost comes up. Driving style will determine the amount of smoke you get from DD3's when not running a fueling box.

Thanks LSSmith, your comments are very helpfu.

Sounds like, money-wise, ETH owners might be better off with DD2s or DD3s than with 275 RVs and an EZ.

You will still need a boost module to make any use out of the bigger injectors or you'll set an over boost code in an otherwise stock truck.

Diesel Dynamics had a pretty slick one. It was built into the MAP sensor, If warranty is an issue for you, DC will never know it's there. Give them a call 800-628-8111

With DD3's warranty is on you, a complete moron will know you added power with one drive across the lot.

ANY boost module is fine, there really is no difference in them. Practical Solutions has the sheapest one new I think.
