Hi and thanks for the feedback and suggestions from all who have commented.
FYI, the truck is in un-drivable condition. The key insert/assembly was tugged out and thrown on the floor. The mechanism behind it was really gnarled up with a hammer and screwdrivers to get the mechanism to turn forward and start. I tried to get the mechanism to turn on with some screwdrivers, getting it to turn on the battery, but not able to turn it all the way forward to starting (turning-over) position. So the truck is still at the impound. The mobile insurance adjuster is going to check it out tomorrow.
The truck was found about 24 hours after it was taken, and it is amazing how much damage idiots can do in that much time. The truck was found because some homeowners in Omaha called the sheriff and said that there was a running truck in front of their house (my truck is pretty loud with the 4" MBRP!) with 2 people passed out inside. The cops came and arrested them (one white male 35 years old, one white female 36 years old) for possession of stolen property valued over $1,500. I'm tempted to put their inmate detail info links on this page, but perhaps I shouldn't because it is so public and I don't want their friends / family coming this way...
The truck now has the following problems:
- stolen cap / topper w/custom Herculiner job (I JUST put on new gas lift shocks and a new lock on the glass for holiday travels!!!)
- stolen Pioneer CD player w/iPod hookup cable.
- stolen hitch ball.
- stolen cds.
- stolen wheel lock key.
- stolen "trailer aid" ramp to change a flat tire on a tandem axle trailer.
- stolen ratcheting cargo straps.
- stolen change from the center console (probably used to buy the fast food we found remnants of).
- stolen gallons of extra oil and antifreeze that were half empty. Come on.
- lots of Christmas gifts that were in garbage bags well hidden under the topper at the front of the bed were stolen.
- ignition totally shot. plastic on the steering column broken out.
- broken driver's exterior door handle. A big scratch where they used a screwdriver to jack up the handle and break in somehow.
- a big scratch (wide, but not too long) on the back driver's quarter panel, perhaps from throwing off the truck bed cap.
- a broken trailer hitch wiring bracket. Not sure if they towed with it or the truck was backed into something
- crap everywhere (dirt, cigarette butts, empty beer bottles, fast-food remnants, etc. ). Very frustrating for me who likes to detail the truck monthly if not more. The door pull handles were used as ash trays.
- smells like crap: without trying to offend smokers, leaving about 20 butts and smoking in my truck have left it with a stench. Combined with open beer bottles and whatever other bodily fluds, it will take some serious carpet cleaner, leather treatment, and armor-all to get her smelling good again.
We pulled out 5, 20-gallon plastic garbage bags of crap (I mean "evidence" that we turned in to the sheriff) that was not ours including:
- pillows.
- bras / underwear.
- stolen? cds that were not ours.
- stolen? about 30 keys to various things that were not ours.
- purses & credit cards.
- tools, including an angle grinder with many wheels that could be used to cut locks and other metals.
- a backpack with art supplies and needles / syringes in it. GROSS! *#$()*$% druggies.
Things I'm surprised they didn't steal:
- aftermarket spare rim and brand new spare tire.
- iPod (perhaps there are enough stolen iPods out there and they didn't want the Jesus music I have on it

- lockable utility tote in the bed (which had the trailer aid, extra oil and antifreeze, trailer hitch ball, & cargo straps)
- cross country skis with poles and boots
- downhill ski helmet and goggles: I guess Omaha car thieves are not into winter sports.
The jerk even wore my down-filled Eddie-Bauer vest to buy fast food: a receipt, lighter, and change were left in my pocket! I promptly thew the stanky vest into the garbage.
In Iowa, the license plates have county names on them. Since we live in North Iowa and my sister in law (who we were visiting) lives in western Iowa, the thieves knew were were from out of town. I think Iowa should get rid of the county stamping!
It is just a truck. But I do take a great deal of care with my property and having someone take it is like having a home invasion. Your personal sense of space and privacy are violated. It is defeating and frustrating. We took what we thought were appropriate steps to protect ourselves in a 'nice' residential neighborhood: locked the doors, locked the tailgate and canopy glass, hid Christmas gifts out of sight in black garbage bags, took the Garmin GPS inside the house, parked under a light, and were 15 yards from my sister in law's front door. My sister in law left for work at 5:30am and the neighbor left for work by 6:30am and didn't see the truck so it was taken in the early morning hours.
Since I have yet to drive her, I'm not sure about the drivetrain. I popped the hood and it didn't look like anything was tampered with there. I'm a bit worried about the 4wd because it was engaged when I saw the truck. I bet they drove around town with it on. I know they didn't put any fuel into her because there is a trick I have to do with the fuel cap to get it to breathe right...
All of this being said... I have to remember to be thankful that we are very blessed to 1) be safe, 2) to have more than we deserve, and 3) to have our treasures stored up in heaven where moth and rust do not destroy and thieves do not break in and steal. (Matthew 16)
Thanks for reading if you got this far... you can see I'm a bit long-winded and wound up about this.
