I was traveling at 30mph and the engine stopped as if the switch had been shut off and the check engine light came on. Using my Genysis Scan tool I retrieved DTC - P1689 (Internal Injection pump Module failure) & P1688 ( ECM and Pump Module communication error). I followed the diagnostic steps in the Dodge Power Train diagnositc manual for P1689 which indictaed a failed ECM, however the live datastream for all other functions from the ECM are still functional. A check of the APPS, Lift Pump pressure, Fuel Inction pump relay, and Crank position sensor test ok.

1. What part has failed, VP44 PUMP MODULE, VP44 Pump itself or the ECM ?

2. Is there a program and connector available for the OTC Genysis scan tool to directly test the VP44 injection pump module and for the ECM ?

Internal VP44 Electronics is dead. You'll need to replace the VP44. Rebuilt VP44 pumps have upgraded the electronics.

Exactly the same here. Same codes too.

This happened at six years, ten months, twenty-one days with 130,737 miles on the clock. The VP44 was replaced under the Cummins Diesel Engine Limited Warranty—the details are in Thread 171690 . There are likely a number of 1999 Rams that still have a covered VP44.

Good luck!
