I was at supraforums.com (I have a 93 supra hardtop - Inline 6 and turbocharged just like my ram :) and I ran into this good story posted in the KILL FORUMS by another supra owner (I got his ok to put it on TDR)

04 Diesel Ram VS Ford diesel.

"So I’m in-between towns today riding along side this new body style (03-04) 4 door 1 ton diesel ram, The ram is pulling a old big thing that looked like it would gather up hay. Anyway I’m in the trooper just riding along going from light to light. After about the 3ed red light it dawns on me that in normal driving im not pulling away from this ram. I don’t think a lot about it and go on my way. We get almost into the next town where they have another row or street lights. Each one about mile apart. These two young guys (looked to be late teens) in a extra cab super duty diesel come out of god knows where, (hardies or long john silvers) anyway they have no muffler so you get that VRRRROOM sound the fords make. He pulls up behind me and starts revving the motor, Im like WTF? Im in a trooper, any way its a newer version of the SD, it has the clear head lights and 6. ? sticker on the door. light turns green I pull out normal and then get in other lane in front of the ram. The ford slows down and start gassing in it a low gear so the front end is going up and down. They do this for about 2 block then take off then slow down then take off again. We get to another red light and its Ford, Me, and the ram behind me. The guys is the ford start power-braking the truck at the red light. Im like ok…. Light goes green they drop the clutch and are out of there… I’m thinking to my self if I was in the Gelaendewagen I would see how bad that diesel is. Im sure I would have lost but G has to be stronger than the trooper. Anyway they do this again at another light. When we pull out the ram moves over in the fast lane and passes me. I look over at him like WTF? Are you doing. There where two older men looking to be in there late 40’s and dog I hope? ( not sure what moving around in the back seat, It was either a dog or goat) Anyway he nods at me when they pass. The pull up next to the ford and the kids start there hopping again. We are running about 30-35 mph The brake lights on the ram come one and a little black smoke starts coming out the exhaust, On the 3ed or 4th hop of the ford the Ram takes off. Pull about a half a truck on the ford, the ram shifts and the black smokes starts to roll out the back, Im like holey hell he’s pulling the ford. So I floor Todd (the trooper) and they keep pulling away, at 50 mph the ram had a full tuck and about 5 feet of the trailer in font of the the ford. 65 its about the same 70 the same 75 the ford starts to make up some ground, He is almost to tailgate of the dodge. 90 the ford is to the rear tires, 95mph the dodge just starts walking off. Im assuming the ford hit its limiter. I stayed in it to 110 mph at which I let out because, well if you have ever ridden in or driven a Isuzu trooper you know what I mean. Anyway I think I might have to pick up a new diesel ram. That would make a Hell of a supra puller

Not a exciting race between a lambo and a Shelby cobra but I thought you would get a kick out of it.

I just LOVE stories like that - how would you like to showing off yer new "powerhouse" Ford to yer bud, and then get BEAT by 2 OLD guys in a Dodge - while THEY are towing a trailer... :) :)

I'm a HUGE fan of MKIV Supras... . but, I don't go on Supraforums.com all that much. When I do... I'm "I6UnderPressure".....

Back to the 'kill' story... .

Good Kill !!

There's a similar story on the 300ZX forum of a P-Pump 6BT vs. a relatively mild 300ZXTT... and the Dodge EATS the Z-car... .

I too love the Supras. Nothing like twins... STOCK.

My dad always said when I was just learning to drive that an Inline will make more tq than a V. Took Toyota a long time to cave into hype and put a V8 in the Landcuriser, word I heard last was that they (Toyota) was going to bring back the Supra with a V8. An SC is a prequil?

Q... why the brake lights?

JRG

"Q...why the brake lights?"

If you're talking about my LED conversion project (that I'm still trying to get 'off the ground'... )... I have seen cars/trucks with nice looking LED taillights and want the same for my vehicles...

I figure that I could do it pretty cheap and have fun doing a little project.

I'd never buy a Supra with a V8..... and I think Toyota would be stupid to put anything but a 2JZ-GTE under the hood. That engine has proven itself MANY times as being VERY durable and an extremely high performance engine.

I heard you can get crazy horsepower from the Supra inline sixes, as in 1000HP, but I don't know what mods that involves. I heard one that was turned up pretty high and it sounded absolutely awesome.

Give me a big block V8 any day, you can keep them rice grinders. Pour kids theese days don't know what "real" power is all about.

Ya pour pour kids. Lets see,

Supra: Inline 6. Cummins: Inline 6.

Supra: Turbo Charged. Cummins: Turbo Charged.

My Supra: 6 speed. My Cummins 6 Speed.

Supra: TRD Dodge cummins: TDR

I guess my ram is a rice grinder. And as far as big blobk v8's, sounds like someone should be driving a 7. 3 powerstroke

I though we were taking cars here. The only place a I-6 belongs is in a diesel truck. The same way that a V8 shouldn't be in a diesel, chevy proved that starting with the 6. 2. Oh and don't forget the might Detroit V8 diesel, well they made alot of noise any way. LOL

My point was that most of the kids now days don't know what real power is from the hay day of muscle cars and big block V8's. You won't see me in any hyped up little 4 cylender or 6 for that mater.

Oh ya, I always thought TRD was just short for TURD

Easy, easy.

I drove a Supra in 1981 for a while (a loaner). Nice ride but a bit thirsty compared to 4 cyl.

You have to have just a bit of respect for some of the turbo ricers, like the one that showed up at Kauffman's fall brawl last year and made 507 hp outta 1. 8 liters. Man, that would be like 1662 hp outta our Cummins :--)

However, I agree that nothing sounds so good to my old ears (huh, what's 40, Doubleclutch?) as a big block V8 with a big cam.

If you're talking about my LED conversion project ...

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I was refering to the fact that the Cummins in the race first applied his brakes.

Vaughn, your are 1,000% ;) right. Keep in mind that is done with a single LARGE turbo and a STOCK, I repeat STOCK bottom end! Peter Blach, Houston,TX. (sport compact car, Jan 2004) Thats 333. 3 hp. per liter! Sometimes there is substitution for cubic inch

Yes but take all them fancy moods: Turbo's, Fuel injection, dual cams, nitro, ect. Put them all on a 400+ cubic inch V8 and what do ya got... ... . we are talking top fuel drag motors.

My point it that with these small motors you have to do tons of expensive mods and computer controls to them to get the power out of them. And then when they do make power it seems it is always at 6000 rpms and have no low end power what so ever and aren't very driveable. Take a well built naturaly asperated V8 with some speed parts in it and a good build job and you can have 500-600 hp no problem, still go drive it every day, and pull stumps out of the back yard on the week end it you want.

And we won't even get into the fact that all these little hot rods now days aren't nothing more then a big roller scate either. Just the weight difference between the old muscle car and what is around now days it big. Take that build up V8 and put it in your Supra, can you say death wish.

My bad, I thought that was directed at me. No bubbles bursted here...

Cool story.

I agree with everyone that there is nothing cooler sounding than a big V8 gasser. The small motors can make huge numbers though. There is an article in this month's Hot Rod mag about Pro Stock (normally aspirated V8) and Pro Import (turbo'd I6) that are making similar times in the 1/4.

If you are looking for an economical car with some speed, nothing beats a turbocharged 4 cylinder. I owned a 16 valve FI 1. 9 liter Saturn that would go over the mountain passes with ease and get 35+ MPG. I would not pull my trailer with it though ;)
