Now my for my next project! #ad

The exhaust has rusted threw at the front and rear connection of the muffler the rest of the exhaust forward is barely tarnished #ad
.
I've found a shop who will cut and bend the rear pipe straight threw for $60(3" aluminized).
I really would like to do this but I don't want the truck to be to loud #ad
!
Any comments are appriciated.

Eugene, I'm taking your advice from the other post( #ad
need more posts #ad
).
I was also wondering about the noise issue, but I am planning on going to 3 1/2" or 4" pipe and was wondering if there would still be a benefit if I left the original downpipe the went 3 1/2" till I got by the transfer case then 4" straight out the back. #ad

I have also heard this #ad
IF IT'S TO LOUD,YOUR TO OLD! #ad

Guys,
Suprisingly the straight exhaust is not that loud, at idle and at normal cruise it's hardly noticable, towing or a hard launch of the line (15 lbs boost and up)people will know there's a diesel comming there way, but nothing ear piercing the turbo actualy acts like a mufler of sorts realy cutting down on the noise, what i did,nt like was the high tinny hollow pipe sound, so installed a Dynomax all welded racing mufler, straight thru 31/2" it did'nt quet it any just deeped the pitch WARNING your gas milage will decrease for the first couple of hundred miles because it sounds so good at 20 psi

Hello Guys:
A few years back I fitted up the Banks stinger exhaust, (3. 5" free flow pipe and muffler) to replace the rusted stock muffler and rear pipe. This last November while at Ted J's facility for pump and injectors, we dropped the fairly restrictive Banks muffler and cut out the slight bend at the transfer case pipe. We installed a straight thru Dynomax muffler, and a nice straight 3. 5" pipe section. Results on a 1st Gen powerhouse with HP pump and HP injectors: Excellent! Nice Cummins Power sound, turbine whine and deep grunt and bark when you are serious about bringing it up thru the gears. It does not sound like a ford six on crack. My suggestion is a 3. 5" free flow system, WITH a straight thru non restrictive muffler. It'll let the Cummins sound like it was designed to. I think you will love it.
Have fun.

I too put on a 3 1/2" Banks exhaust a few months ago. ait beats the stock exhaust but I was a little dissapointed that it is so quiet. I wanted a little more sound. It added about 2 MPG and the exhoust temps never get over 950 (even towing). I have another muffler planed after some other mods to make it sound better.
I agree we need more posts and I'll do my part. One thing I am concerned about is the lack of posts from 1st gen guys in the Products forum. All you see are product from newer trucks, but with the rule against asking about 1st gen products in this forum I am at a loss as to where to go. Don't seem to get good response to 1st gen related products that relate only to our trucks. What do you think "old school".

If you like the "Big Truck" sound, you'll love the straight sound. It gets a little loud on a good long grade reverbing off the mountains and concrete barriers. (Its also a little tough not to wake the neighbors in the morning #ad
.

IMHO source out a 3 1/2" pipe for over the axle, the results are noticable!! Once you drop the tail section out you'll wonder how they could make that junk from factory. Tight elbows and pinched down near the box. The pinch at the x-fer case is also a sore spot.

The low number of posts isn't from lack of trying... . We just don't have as many probs I guess. #ad

I was thinking about installing A Jardine 3. 5" System, but after inspecting the front of the exhaust for wear and tear I decided to keep it. Especially after finding someone to do the Job for $60 #ad

Hey Eugene!

I agree with everything the first Gen'ers have suggested. I plan to follow along the Dynomax muffler in the near future.

Here's my story! I took off the OEM muffler as my first modification back in November when I bought the truck. My local shop welded in a 3" straight pipe section ($30. 00) and I thought it sounded good. My mom never even complained during an 8 hour trip to Florida.

It stayed that way until I installed the Banks "stinger Plus" kit in December. I was initially disappointed in how quiet the Banks muffler was. Back to the shop the next day to cut off the Banks Muffler & install 3" straight pipe once again. Only, this time (w/ the Banks kit) it was 'way' loud on the interstate. It just boomed! Couldn't even drowned it out w/ Bluegrass music on the CD player!
Back the next day to reinstall the Banks until I could rethink & gain some knowledge from my TDR brothers. The Banks is still currently still under there.

Observations: With the crush bent OEM exhaust the straight pipe was fine due to it's restrictive nature. With a free flowing exhaust I thought it just boomed too much for Keeno's enjoyment.

Just my experience! Keeno

Question: Is Dynomax manufactured by Walker?

Old School,
If I understand your post a straight piece of 3 1/2" will fit through by the transfer case? I couldn't tell if it would when I looked but it's hard to tell with that bent up mangled stock pipe in the way. #ad
I am going to weld this up myself so was wondering if it would make a lot of difference if I left the stock down pipe from the turbo until it is vertical and then going 3 1/5" from there, is the Banks down pipe 3 1/2" from the turbo?
Thanks for all the info, #ad

Caleb: The banks system used the original downpipe, then a 3" smoother pipe to the muffler, with a 3. 5" from the outlet of the muffler to the exit end of the pipe. At Ted J's we wacked the muffler and most of the 3" inlet pipe (Banks) and replaced the muffler with a Dynomax straight thru, and a straight section of 3. 5" inlet pipe. The result was a less restrictive and shorter muffler, with the elimination of a dogleg in the inlet pipe.
You would do well if you left the downpipe, and went larger, straighter, and less restrictive from that point back.
Regards

We recently had a customer who bought the 3. 5 inch BD exhaust, and had also installed the 12CM2 wastegated turbo housing - along with performance injectors and a mild crank on the pump.

It wasn't loud, but it had an AWESOME turbo buzz even at idle, and blipping the throttle even very briefly resulted in a very noticeable "whistle" from the tailpipe. Although it didn't seem loud, you could hear the truck coming for at least a 1/4 mile, with a deep, mellow growl reminiscent of a 400 cummins #ad

When you shut the engine down, you could continue to hear the turbo spin down for about 10 to 15 seconds after the engine ceased moving.

Got the Can Chopped Yesterday and added a 3" straight pipe in its place.
Love the Big Rig Sound #ad
. And listening to the Turbo spooling up and down is great #ad
.
But I have to admit it's almost to loud for me #ad
. I'm only 31, and I used to own a 70 Dodge Polara 2dr with a 383 and dual 2" sraight pipes( #ad
WOW what a sound #ad
) and loved it. But my last house was only 2 blocks away from a local bar. And every night at 2AM i'd here Harley's roaring down my street when the bar closed #ad
. Really ticked me off because I leave for work at 4:30AM and need every bit of shut eye I can. Eventually I learned to hate loud exhaust, so I sold my Polara and the house.

Maybe when this exhaust wears out I'll get 4" mandrel bent, I'll bet that will smooth it out abit.

OK Ihave a 93 2WD Clubcab, Jardine only makes pipes for 4WD. I can't get into BD's website and Banks wants too much money. Is there a clearance problem that I can't see? Oldschool seems to have most of the answers so have pity on me, I too want to run with the big dogs and have ate least a 3 1/2" straight through. Anyone know someone in the Sacramento area that can fix me up. (I don't weld. )

Bigharv,

I think the main reason there are only places that sell exhuast for 4x4 and not 2x4 are because the amount of bending and tight corners around the t-case in the 4x4's.
You might want to check around your local area and see if someone could bend 3. 5 or 4 inch pipe. I'll bet you'll save some money.

A local shop in my area said they could have a mandrel bent pipe ordered from Des Moines IA for under $250 (Straight no muffler).
