I really want to modify my exhaust. Power wise I am through, the EZ and AFE are enough. I need this to be a reliable vehicle.

You guys with the drone are you straight piped in a factory exhaust system or aftermarket? Standard or Auto? What other mods do you have that could be a factor in adding to the drone?

Thanks!

PS If you had the drone, How did you fix it?

I have straight 5" exhaust. when I first put it on, it droned so bad, it felt like someone was jabbing your eardrums w/ an ice pick! and I was used to 5" straight stacks!!!!

I have a length of flex pipe from the stacks connecting the downpipe to about the front of the bed, then it's just straight exhaust from there.

all of the tailpipe connections are welded, and I added some very stiff exhaust hangers that I added to keep the tailpipe from sagging. I feel that these act like hoding your finger on a tuning fork... keeps the pipe from being able to vibrate so much.

then I lined the interior w/ lead sheet. you could use a sound deadener like dynamat, but I got the lead for free ;)

the resonance inside the truck is LESS than when I had a 27" long muffler installed when I didn't have welded connections, stiff hangers, or sound deadener!!!

mine was a piece ex. pipe an a couple of adapters got from tractor trailer place welded together loosend up ex pipe in clamps rotated pieces around to line up an clamped in place only about 35. 00 $ cheap enough to try see if you like not bad at 55 to60 70 to 80 long drive gets old

I started with eliminating the muffler on the stock exhaust. then I went to 5" straight pipe, to 5" stacks and now I am back to 4" with the muffler. I wish I would have just gotten the 4" w/muffler from the begining. Everything else all had the drone. It 's not to loud or to quiet.

Is this drone on Standards or autos? Or is it just prone to our 3rd generations? Any one in Louisiana straight piped so I could hear it?

Any one use the Geno's elimination kit and not have the drone?

it's present on all trucks... it's from the sound waves inside the pipe vibrating the pipe itself... much like a tuning fork... then the vibrating pipe puts off sound waves that hit the cab of the truck and your ears...

you can either keep the pipe from vibrating so much (by reducing the strengt of the sound waves inside w/ a mufler or by holding the pipe w/ stiff hangers or added mass on the pipe) or you can keep the cab sheetmetal from vibrating so much (by using sound deadener)

FWIW, my stacks didn't resonate near as bad as my straight 5" system... I contend it's because the exhaust was hard mounted to the bed and the stacks are much shorter than a full length exhaust pipe, so they resonate at a totally different frequency... don't get me wrong, they were loud, but I'd be interested to hear what it would have sounded like w/ all sound deadener I've added.

but, I'm happy w/ what I've got now... killer sound outside, plenty livable inside :D

I have the drone, wasn't sure what everyone talked about and wanted it quiet so I went with a 51" long Donaldson "Silent Partner" muffler that has a a 5" inlet and outlet. I have a 4" down pipe with 5" the rest of the way.

This muff is rated to 435hp with great flow numbers, has all kinds of sound deadening features.

My trouble is towing on any grade especially at lower RPM's, all I can say is its a super deep tone that sounds like I have a 55 gal barrel under the cab for a muffler:(

Haven't fixed it yet and may try a 4" tail pipe first cuz I am thinking the exhaust note is echoing in the big pipe.

no droan

I put a 5" external stack on my truck, no muffler. Factory down pipe to 30" 3. 5" pipe to, 3. 5 to 4" adapter to 4" to 4" 90deg. elbow to 4" to 5" adapter to 90deg. 5" x5" elbow to 5" x 60"Tall stack with 90deg. turnout. Droan was bad at 2000 -2200 rpm. , 3 weeks of complaints from my wife was enough of that! I removed enough 3. 5" pipe to add another 3. 5" to 4" adapter and a 27" donaldson 4" in and out muffler with center baffle knocked out. No other changes. now NO droan and a very throaty sound with out being too loud. all joints from down pipe back use band style donaldson clamps. PM if you have any questions. RAY:)

What about factory systems with the Eliminator pipe? All you guys are talking about 4" & 5" systems.

Any one use the Aeroturbine system from Dave Meehan that keeps most of the factory exhaust?

I get the drone on hard acceleration which i don't do too much. Normal easy accelleration she sounds sweet. Drone is a symtom of big pipes. You expect it.

I don't mind and even like some of it. The hard accel drone is nasty in the cab but since it's only on hard accel I don't care. Highway trips it's pretty darn quiet.

like I said, it's present on all trucks... 3", 4", 5", whatever... to varying degrees.

the Aeroturbine is a rip-off. I've seen one in person, and there isn't $200 worth of anything there. You can achieve the same or better results for 1/4 or less the money!

Well I did IT

Straight piped the THING!!! IT is FREAKIN LOUD:D

But I am not going to be able to keep it long. No DRONE but Really Loud!!

I took off the muffler and just fit a piece of 4" pipe over the 3. 5" muffler swage tapped down and welded so I could put the factory muffler on if I decide to. But I really would like most of the sound to stay it just needs to be tamed a little, So what muffler do I use? Aeroturbine is kinda pricey but is an option. You should see the faces I get.

This toyo taco pulled on the side of me Window down I noised 'em and smoked'em then he saw nothing but taillights.

He pulls up besides us and stares in disbelief he got smoked by the 7000lb BEAST
