. . My wife followed me home last night with the windows down in the car so she could hear the truck. I ask,,well how does it sound and the response was 'WOW it sounds AWESOME', I guess that means she likes the sound. You have to understand something about my wife, our second date was to a drag race in Bakersfield Ca. and that was over 18 years ago. We brought our daughter home in a 67 SS 396 Chevelle, and at home we had a Vette with a 350 horse 327 and the list goes on.
The spool up over the turbo is excellent and the power has increased. As far as the fuel mileage, yes it has increase a little. But this is the first tank with the new sound and I think too much pressure on the go pedal has made the numbers lower. . I wonder why!!!!!!
If you are thinking about the straight pipe option, I hope this helps. Yes it will be louder than the stock exhaust, yes you will turn heads, yes you will get more power, smoother spool up. For me it was a great decission and if my wife and kids like it, I have it made it the shade #ad

When I first did mine all the neighbors came running out the next morning thinking it was trash day and grabing their trash cans, heehee. One person thought it was the fire dept.

lotsa dirty looks from the yuppies #ad
. . (oops, by definition, I'm a yuppie #ad
) So, I'm a non-conformist! So, I've got no one that could really be defined as a true peer. (might be a "plus" if they ever hafta pick a jury #ad
) So, I'm a minority of 1. Who, really, isn't, right??

I saw a bumper snicker on one of the local rice burning street rods that read, "IF ITS TOO LOUD, YOU'RE TOO OLD". I hope I didn't have my head shoved up that far 20 years ago.

One of my pleasures is being near a person in a tricked rice burner that's trying to talk on the wireless phone while at a traffic light. I usually kick it in neutral and up the rpms to 1100. Have to make sure I don't cool the engine and carbon the valves... .....

BTW Factory muffler & cat (for now).

What's that you say

Hey guys, I keep hearing all about the legal aspects of cat killin' and straight pipes. Anyone with any experience here??

That's where we diesel owners have the advantage. The dummies who are out there looking for problems will never figure us out. First of all, pre 94 had no cat. 94-98 had one. Then 98 up none again. Too confusing for the simple mind.

Hey guys... .

Got back last night from a trip over the Thanksgiving Holiday with the 5th wheel in tow. .
I wish now that I had cut these things off the day after I brought the truck home. What a difference in the way the truck runs. Hills that I would drop down to 4th, she went right over in 5th with no drop in rpms or speed, I know for sure because the cruise was set! On what I call my test hill(2 miles of 6% grade), I went further up it before I had to shift to 4th and I went over the top at 60 and still she was gaining speed. But my trailer only weighs about 7000lbs too.
Now it does make things louder, but the trade off is worth it. . My wife slept about an hour during the trip while I was pulling thru some of the coastal range mountains and it did not bother her.
When I went thru the rv park I got the attention of some of the other Cummins owners and before you know it I had about 6 of them coming over and asking questions. This gave me a chance to plug the TDR and membership and the benefits. I had a great time of shooting the bull with people that had never seen or heard of TDR and also I had to show them Scott's air induction system too.
If you have not killed the cat and dropped the muffler, it was worth the time and money for me...

What did you put in place of the muff and cat? Did you use the cat-test pipe from Dodge, and an ME kit from Genos, or did you make your own pipe to fill in the gap. I really want to run a straight pipe, but I havent decided what is the best route to do this.

I had a friend of mine put in a straight piece of 3" exhaust pipe after removing the cat and muffler. It connected the down pipe and the tail pipe(about 5'). He welded both ends in and down the road I went. .

Conleyjo,I went with a bolt together route from NAPA. They sell all sizes of pipe, reducers and clamps. I won't say what sizes you need because it seems like every year is different, you need to climb under with a tape and caliper. Hardest part is removing the old system, especially if you want to salvage anything. It's best to use a torch to heat the ends of the cat and muffler then wiggle them off. You will need about 6' of pipe one reducer and three clamps,my setup cost less than $30 from NAPA.

OK ... sounds like a good idea, but, what about when you folks go for your yearly (or whatever time frame) inspections? Don't you folks fail on emissions? Or, if you don't have emissions in your state is there some noise level restriction that you must adhear to? I have just under 98K on my 1997 and would love to remove the cat and put in a straight pipe, but I fear that here in NH we may go to emissions testing in the near future and then I'd be in trouble. And what would you folks do when emissions testing comes to a station near you?

I take the cat out of the shed where I have it tied up and put it back inplace for the inspection. I would put some bolt plates on the end so that I could remove again if I needed or wanted to . .

FatCat, just a thought... but how about tossing the cat and when inspection time comes around, slide your plate way back so you dont burn any fuel? That should get you thru inspection!

I've yet to hear of one person who has been nailed by the smog police for removing the cat. It's so hit or miss which years and types of diesel trucks have cats that I doubt if any inspector even knows which rigs are supposed to have them. On diesels the smog check is an opacity test(smoke). The chemicals that a cat is supposed to remove are clear and don't effect the opacity.

I posted this a long while back, I am an automotive instructor at a tech school and one of the things I show the kids is how a cat work off the vehicle using a oxy/acet torch. My cat has been off for better than a year now and one day I was doing my demo and desided to do the same to my cat and guess what it works exactly the same as a gasser's cat. There was no difference other than it took it longer to get up to temp because of it's size. I believe the cat that was put on the 94 1/2 - 98 1/2 a farse diesels and gasser make different emissions. The cats where put on to make the EPA feel good!!!!!

Thanks for the help. I want to do the bolt on setup, since my wife might make me put things back on as soon as she hears the noise. My wife most likely wont care, but my neighbors are another story. They have there cars towed if the battery goes dead, or if they get a flat (I am not exaggerating). Lets face it... my neighbors would not think that my truck sounds "COOL", and I am not even going to mention BOMBing to them. I might need to get the air horns to take there mind off the exhaust, but that will be another post in the future #ad

Off to NAPA I go this weekend.

Thanks again

Conleyjo, you can leave the muffler on or buy a free flowing type. Removeing just the cat will give you a noticeable power boost. It really isn't much louder without a muffler, but a much different(nicer) tone.
