hey guys what are ya'lls opinions on the straight-piped exhaust? i want it loud, been having my"old" new to me, truck a while now (1 month) and its too "quiet"! :D what performance gains/drops are noticed with a straight exhaust, etc.

a friend of mine at school told me that a straight exhaust will ruin  an engine "diesel", i new this about a gasser w/ emmision controls , but a diesel, please clarify.

thanx

The main benifit/drawback of straing pipe is noise. It will decrease backpressure and help airflow out of the engien but I doubt you will notice much of a performance gain. It wont ruin anything.

It will definitly be louder, it might help spool up a little, I noticed it with my truck. I am running a 4"straight pipe right now, and I ran a straight on my old 91. 5, and I love them, I tried running a magnaflow for a while on my truck now, but it was not quite loud enough. Now it definitly is. Anyhow, I think you will like it.

straight pipe won't ruin a gasser either...

anyhow, on your truck go for it! :D both the cat and the muffler are pretty restrictive. as stated above, the turbo will spool up quicker and it'll also lower your EGT's. probably won't be much of a performance increase, but it'll sure sound sweet!

This is probably why your friend is still in school, tell him to actually attend the classes for autoshop and read!!!

You are not going to hurt a diesel engine with straight pipe, The turbo will provide enough back pressure if it were a concern in the first place, which its not. If you were to cut off the exhaust right at a head on an engine, you may have a heat dissipation concern when the engine were shut off as it immediately allow cool air to come near the valves etc. but that is a pretty extreme case and not even relevant for our trucks due to the turbo and manifold setup. I guess old wive's tales are hard to let go once started.

If you drive through any traffic tunnels, I would lean away from this, I was heading into the washington tunnel last year on vacation with my '96 and was about going nuts by the time I got out again, it was a little too much, I put the muffler back in when we came home. I have since put a 4" banks monster exhaust which is plenty loud enough for me. Its your choice, but just remember, it is a real pain when trying to slip through an area unnoticed when you are setting off car alarms or vibrating a parking garage two levels up and down. Does your girlfriend live with her folks still? Her daddy will like the open pipes after her curfew, thats for sure! :-laf

right after i got my truck i pulled the muf+cat off and ran 4" out the side in front of the tire. it was cool for a while but the drone was horrible. i had to yell to talk when climbing passes empty. after the trailer i had to loose it. got a 4" magnaflow and tailpipe. much quieter but i dont think its low enough.

i paid 300 bucks for this and then found out that i can get a full 4" system for the same price. whats your buget?

thanks for all the replys guys. the muffler is coming of! :D the cat has already been hollowed out and put back on by the first owner, so i won't have to take it off. do stacks look good on a 2wd club cab?

In my opinion stacks look good as long as they are not to tall, especially not tall on a 2wd. Some people dont like stacks at all. You might try and find pictures of some trucks with different configurations to see how you like them (single angle cut, turnout, dual angle cut or turnouts, etc.

I would put stack (s) on it but that may just be me.

I have a 3500 twd club w/ a single 5" stack just bought 2 6" bull horn stacks will start fabing stack base in a week stacks cost me $300 a piece but there 72 inches long and 6"

you can buy a 5" turn out at any nally or chrome shop thats about 3 foot long for about $60 enjoy
