I know I am beating a dead horse, but I just wanted a little insight. I have had straights on all my Dodges, but I have left the 01 alone. Well, I cant take it anymore. I am going to straight pipe the factory system for now. I might put a 4" on later. Should I:

A. Take off the resonator and muffler and put a piece of 3" in thier place, bent to fit of course?

B. Put a reducer on the resonator, get a piece of 3" bent, and hook it up with an res. and no muffler.

C. Or buy the "test pipe" and put it on.

I would leave the res on for one reason. It is now illegal to run mufflerless and a HiPo (highway patrol), would probably be fooled by the resonator.

If choice C is best, where can I get a good deal on a "test pipe"?

Any other suggestion. Besides get a 4", I can't afford it right now.

I left my resonator on for the same reason you stated and because I have not heard of any performance gain in removing it. I think it's plenty loud that way.

Took both muffler and resonator off and replaced with a 3", 12 gauge piece of pipe. If you remove both you do not have to bend the pipe to fit. Fits perfect and sounds great.

Someone posted awhile ago that a turbo is considered to be a approved "muffler". Don't know if there is any truth to that. :)

Found a solution.

I stopped by the local truck supply on the way home yesterday. I got a 4"-3" reducer, a piece of 3" flex pipe and another clamp. This weekend I am going to get the muffler off, grind the welds loose on the clamp that hangs the front of the muffler (these used to not be welded), and build a bracket to hang the front of the tail pipe (where the rear muffler hangs now). If it looks like I can get away with a piece of rigid pipe in there (instead of flex pipe) I have some on hand. I'll see if all this works. I hate mufflers.

Auto Zone sells a universal muffler mounting kit that works well for holding the front of the tail pipe. I used this kit with the existing rubber mounts that the muffler hangs from. I bolted it up real tight to try and limit vibrations that could cause drone. I wonder if the flex pipe will be more likely to cause drone problems people report?

i have heard that too. . i am not sure if it applys to light duty vehicles, but on hwy trucks, the turbo is enough [at least in ontario afaik]. them trucks are loud when they have the 5" piping split to dual 6" stacks. . especially when they hit the jake brake at top idle [or a bit higher... ]

my $0.02

1) The state of California does concider the turbo to be a mufler.

2). I have stright 3" from turbo to tail, no resonator, or mufler, and I love it. For under $50, all weilded in too, why not?

It is my understanding that the only reason we have a resognator in there is to keep the decibles down on noise so we can meet the minium requirments... ... ... ... . Kevin

from my understanding is that the turbo isn't enough. they have meters for the sound decibels. i got pulled over for my straight pipe so i'm at stock exhaust now (will be going to 3" flow through muffler though). some places/cops just turn their heads:eek:

i just got the new truck's muffler hacked off

but left on the resonator, so far I am VERY disappointed!!!

i hope the timing enhancement of the comp changes the tone...

otherwise that resonator is history !!!!

I took out both resonator and muffler on both of mine. Sounds great, but in Iowa they don't seem to care how loud it is. Same story on price, it cost be about $45 for them to cut out old and weld in a new piece.
