Finally got the old girl straight piped and I love the sound. For cost reasons I stuck with the 3" exhaust. Just got a 6' piece of 3" and had each end opened up to fit over 3".
For all you people who aren't sure if you want to do it because of the noise, don't hesitate. It really doesn't make that much noise unless you really put the fuel to her.

Oasis, How'd you know?!!!! The kids kept complaining about the rain coming in on them so I had to roll it up occasionally... LOL.
Now I can hear the turbo on both ends.

Just wait until you get around a bunch of tall buildings... . or inside a carwash stall. It usualy takes me about 30 min longer than it should to wash my truck #ad

Any tips for removing the cat. I purchased the "test pipe" last week and have been tring to figure out the best approach for installation. I would like to do this myself and not have to search out a shop willing to do the installation or at least loosen up the pipe joints so I can then pull it apart at home. Muffler has already "fell off".

I have read previous threads and it sounds like you need the "hot wrench" (aka torch) to remove the cat. I don't really want to buy a bunch of expensive tools for this one time project. Would one of those propane torches or the 2 bottle type torches from hardware stores work?? Looking for any tips to help the project go smoothly, if it's even possible.

Cumminsgetme, I'll have to remember the car wash whenever I need my fix. I wonder if anyone will think I'm odd if I just pull in, crack the throttle a couple of times, and then pull out... lol.

Tuffram, I have an air compressor and air tools to make my job easier. I have a torch too but just don't like the idea of firing it up under the truck.
Using a die grinder with 3" cutting wheel made the job pretty easy. Just be sure to wear safety glasses no matter how you do it.

I usually go to a local Meinieke (Spelling?) for quick exhaust mods. They wont charge much to remove a cat or muffler and they have all the RIGHT tools like a lift, torch, expanders, etc. The one near me threw 2 flowmasters in my friends mustang for 50 bucks. Took 15 minutes. Give them a try

Ok now I tought I was the only one that sat in the car washes, drove with right window down and loved the building echo sound,,Wife and kids think I have a screw loose,I keep telling them that I do not I just love the sound to my ears,,Then it happened, the friggin cassette/cd player crapped out and when wife took truck and came home recently I was asked how long it was broken,,Told her awhile now and I was not concerned about it(radio works not sure why she's so upset)that I enjoyed the sound of the motor better,so she now really thinks I'm out there,,The most fun I have is while doing my running around though is how many alarms in cars get set off from the harmonious sounds of my unpiped Ram,,Also what better equalizer for the THUMP,THUMP,stereo gang than the unpiped Ram,GOTTA LOVE IT!!!! Man much older than me once said this"LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES",,Ok so its from my H-D days,But it is still true here... ... .

I noticed I don't listen to music as much as I used to while driving. And I don't turn it up over the sound of the engine. I'm getting ready to straight pipe mine, I just haven't gotten to it yet.

I know exactly what you mean. When I'm in town, the windows are down and I'm listening to a beautiful straight pipe. When I'm on the highway, it's all turbo music! I pulled into a gas station a while back and over heard a little boy telling his mom "that's the kind of truck I want when I get older". Made me wonder if it was the beautiful sound of the truck, or just the all around package that made the little kid want it. I know he was just a little kid, but at least he has good taste #ad
And please... . don't tell me that had it been a nice ford I was driving the little kid would have said the same thing... ... and definately don't let my wife (truck) hear that. Like I said... the kid has good taste. ooohhh... . after reading this, I think I like my truck a little too much #ad

I set off my first car alarm yesterday. There are probably several people in river falls wondering why a blue dodge is running around with the passenger side window down in the middle of winter. I love pouring the fuel to her under overpasses, next to walls and buildings. And yes, I even have counted one occurence where a middle finger was sticking up in my rear view mirror after I passed some poor loser with my foot fairly close to the floor. I have gotten yelled at(couldn't hear what they said over the truck), stared at, had people shake their heads at me, you name it. And I don't care, cause I love the sound.
Met a girl with an ETH and I keep telling her I will sneak under her truck and steal the muffler one night, but she doesn't like that idea.
Whoa, I got to get to class.

Hey Leewhiskey,,I got a cure for the obscene finger problem in the mirror,,A little limo tint on the rear window and side wings over the factory tint and no more problem,,I can not figure out why she would not like the idea of no muffler,,I mean,What is she going to do when one night, like me,she goes to bed and gets up only to find ALIENS STOLE her muffler??,,Its the greatest thing they ever did!!,,Now if I can only figure out what in the world they want with all these mufflers and cats that have been taken in my area, mmmmm!!! #ad

I don't really mind the finger I got a good laugh out of it. I even slowed down so I could "blast" him again, but he closed his window and stayed away. Same thing happened a couple weeks ago with some yuppie in a BMW convertable on a cell phone. I made sure as much of the conversation was "interupted" as possible, but he soon exited.
She wants to keep her truck stock basically. She doesn't want to have problems with DC. I even offered to plug my edge EZ in her truck and let her play with it for a few days but she wouldn't do that either. I guess I need to get a clutch in mine so I can have more power, then maybe she will see the BOMBing light. I keep teasing here about "losing" her muffler, and, someday, it might get lost with me. Unfortunately she would assume it was me and would not be happy.
I wish they would abduct a few more around here, I never get to hear a straight piped cummins unless its mine.

I've read about resonance in the cab after the muffler/resonater have been removed. How annoying is this? I've thought about leaving the resonater on as I remember reading it was straight through. Any thoughts or advice? Thanks

This is beginning to look like a testosterone thing. My wife doesn't like it, my 11 year old son loves it. I told the wife I'll leave her Intrepid alone and she can ignore my truck.
There is a little resonance under load at about 1600 rpm, not bothersome in my opinion. My hearing isn't as good as it used to be, worked on too many derby cars over the years.

Thats a negative on the testosterone thing.
My S. O. loves the sound, enough to say "do not put a muffler back on it"!
I got my truck w/ the stk cassette deck that runs @ the wrong speed #ad

After I started "testing" the exhaust system: who cares! I just roll down both windows & in winter open the rear slider & just enjoy that sweet Cummins note.
We did have to torch that baby off-definately no other way on mine. Then to the pro's for the finish. I was very straight w/ the muff shop. "Got this DC PN that fits right here, cut that muffler there & weld her up". Shop said "no problem" & only cost $30 & included some other exhaust weld repair.

When I straight-piped mine (3") it got a loud resonance at about 1900 RPM and another at around 2500. Only really noticable if you were "on" it or pulling a trailer on a big hill. My wife thought it was OK, but liked it better after I put the 4" exhaust & stacks on. But, the resonance was still there, unfortunately right at 65 MPH. I built 4" muffler and the resonance is gone, turbo whistle is perfect, sounds like a well behaved Kenworth or Pete now. #ad

I love it when I go through a tunnel and fill it with smoke and the rumble of an uncorked cummins. #ad

The neighbor kids refer to it as the "Log Truck", or the "Garbage Truck".
we tested it one day at work at idle 94 db
then I blipped the throttle to 1800 rpm and it jumped to 117 db at 2 feet from the pipe #ad
