Straight Piped

Hey I've heard that straight piped diesels tend to breath better and the turbo spools up quicker. ALso I've had a lot of people tell me that i could also burn out an exhuast valve if I'm not careful. Are there any draw backs to removing the muffler on my Cummins (I love the sound, by the way; turbo is real loud). By the way, these were gas driver telling me this stuff.

turn mtr off and listen at tail pipe end
u can still turbo winding down
i have banks pipe w/ muffler pipe
to replace muffler into 4'' chrome turn down tip

it, only hear small drown in cab
also run down windows and drive next to
building on 2 lane rd , noe youll hear it.

Yeah the sound is great. And you are right, I noticed to that you can still hear the turbo winding down after the engine is shut off. Driving next to a building or highway deviders is an awesome powerful sound. I had a friend of mine drive it away from me so I could hear what it sounded like. Sounded like an 18 wheeler. And he was a good 100 yards away, and I could still hear the turbo out the tail pipe while he was sitting at an idle waiting to turn around. And I have noticed a difference in performance as far as spooling up goes. Cool!

Now that you get to hear what a good sounding diesel engine sounds like think about running a stack or two of them they sound even better I think. And next time someone say the old valve burn thing you should remember you've got a turbo between your open pipe and your valves. If you did not have a turbo like the gassers you might have to worry. People also told me that an engin needs back pressure well thats been proven but your turbo also does that too. Welcome to the straight piped club!!!!

The ol burned exhaust valve is from gas engine technology. Now that you are into the turbocharged diesel, forget what they told you. The less pressure drop through your exhaust system the better! Its pressure drop across the turbo that make it spin harder and spool up faster.
The trucks of these years have a very poor pipe design with a serious pinch just between the box and the upper bend over the axle, go take a look, rather feel and you'll be surprised!
So while you are at it, think about a mandrel bent pipe for over the axle. I love not having the muffler and with the 3. 5 over the axle, the increase in performance WAS noticable.

Actually, the stacks were my next order of business. I'm looking to run dual 4" up behind the cab. I don't know where to find good 4"ers though. I might have to stop by a big truck store. Gonna be great.

Howdy:
I just put a single 4'' stack right behind the right side of the cab... it's 6 inches above the top of the cab with a flapper on top. Holy I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER man... GO FOR IT!! people look at you like your crazy, but hey, aren't we all a little bit? cost me $401. 67 for everything... . the bends and clamps and the drilling through the bed were the most expensive part. I used a 5'' hole saw to drill through the metal ... {just a thought}. But Lordy does it Bark like a mad Pitbull!! and with the fuel delivery screw wide open it looks cool under full throttle with black smoke pouring out!! #ad

Yeah i can't wait, it's gonna be great. The smoke screw on the top of the fuel pump... I can't seem to get to that! There are four screws that hold a cap on the top, but I can't get one of the screws to turn. Is this where that smoke screw is? Or am I looking in the totally wrong direction... ? When I get those stacks on, I want a little smoke... but I don't want to kill people #ad

Hey wirenut, man I was looking at your truck before I became a member and it is a kick a** truck, man! What does it sound like? It is awesome. Does the right stack smoke more than the left? Cause I noticed the pipe underneath was shorter. Great job, man!

Thanks Josh. Uh... the sound? You ever heard one of those rigs go by with 2 big shiny 6" stacks going up the sides with no mufflers? The ones that shake the windows in the house. It sounds very similar. I never guessed it would sound that much different than just being straight piped, but it does. The 5" pipes just give it a really deep tone. Definitely turns some heads #ad

Cumminzpowr, Does that flapper on your stack bounce around alot and rattle or not really. I've allways liked the flappers but was scared they'd rattle to much. It's good to know that other people will put stacks on I don't have to feel like the only fool. Man I love mine. Wirenut I saw yours a while ago they look great. I think I spent 125 for my 4inch curve stack and about 25 on my little bit of flex. I welded it up myself. Not to fancy but looks good and sounds better.

The smoke screw is in that cap with the four screws. You don't have to take it off. In the middle of the cap is a little round frost plug looking thing. Take a little screwdriver or somthing and pry that little cap out and the smoke screw is under there with a jam nut around it. Hope this Helps e-mail me if you need more help.
