Hey fellas. Just had my muffler cut out yesterday. Besides the really cool way it sounds now, is there any other benefits from this? Is there any hp gains from this? How about fuel economy? I already have installed the k@ n filter.
I took my muffler off a while back and got my bottom end turbo lag back so my muffler went back on . Different thing's happen to different people or maybe I should say never underestimate the impossible. Oh and throw that K&N filter away and get you a Big Honkin Air Filter and a Old Smoky B. H. A. F. Mount, you will be much happier
Do you have the factory exhaust system, or a similar type of replacement system? If so, the biggest restriction you're going to have is the nasty bend that goes over the rear axle. Removing the muffler isn't going to alleviate this restriction, but it will make the exhaust sound different, as you already know The effects of reducing the restriction of the exhaust system will become more pronounced if you decide to increase your fueling. BTW, removing the muffler definitely won't hurt anything as far as the engine is concerned. I suggest that you should look into getting a new mandrel bent 3. 5" or 4" tailpipe. They look really cool and will get rid of the nasty bend. As for the K&N filter, keep an eye on it and make sure it stays properly oiled. Some of us have experienced the passage of fine dust by the K&N which has prompted the move to the BHAF. On the other hand, others have been perfectly satisfied with the K&N filter. As for your fuel mileage and hp gains..... you'll probably see more benefit from the air filter change than the exhaust, at least where you're at right now. If I remember correctly, I gained maybe about 1mpg when I changed to a K&N and a banks exhaust (all other things being stock). The turbo lag was also slightly reduced which made driveability a bit better.
Thanks for the info. I didn't realize the k@n leaked past the way it does. I will check it first thing tomorrow. Do you know what a mandrel bent 4 inch tailpide is worth? Do they have a slashed tip, if its the same one I'm thinking of. I'll have to start sourcing out a place where I can get aftermarket stuff for the CTD here in Alberta. Surely there has to be places in Edmonton. Anybody know of anywhere in Edmonton, Alberta?
As far as the tailpipe goes, when I got my bank$ exhaust system it cost about $300. Since you want only the tailpipe, it should be much less. You may want to call up PDR and see if they have a tailpipe for you. As far as the tips, there are many different designs available from various sources.
With a straight pipe and 12K in tow you can have fun going through town (if you want too). I have been known to romp the throttle comming off a stop just to set carm alarms off. Of course most people around here have a 12-gauge for an alarm, so you get shot at instead of making the horn and lights go off Seriousy, I like it because I get better turbo spool up off the line, lower EGT across the RPM range, and it sounds nice. I don't think it is any louder in the cab (with the windows up). I wouldn't have mine any other way.
hey, somewhere i heard that goin straight piped would add some 50 hp ,but i can't remember there i heard it,gettin older you know, however i would never go back, them little honda's you know, i have a daully and now can spin my tires, with 265-75-16 tires, how sweet it is.
Take a look through this link. You'll see the info on the tail pipe. Summit carries Walker parts also. I have since added a 5" stainless steel Magnaflow tip, after I got a nice deal from Jardine at Scheids last summer.
