I have had my dodge for 11 months with minimal problems, just recently i noticed a unharmonic whirring noise that is on and off more during load. Thought it might be the belt or something in the front, took belt off ran engine, noise still there ,used a stethascope and the noise seems to be coming from the middle to the back. Could this be the lift pump? This is my first diesel and first dodge also my first post. lol:) :)

Hi,

I know you are in Ontario, and it is probably getting cold up there, but it could be your fan clutch. If you are pulling a heavy load, it will engage often, causing a "whirring" noise. Could also be compared to a "whooshing" sound:D

Here in Arizona, the darn thing still comes on and it is November... and without a load!!!

Thanx, it is getting cold up here. But i removed the belt so the fan wasn't spinning. The sound is coming from the middle to the back of the engine injector side. I know something aint right. Houston we have a problem.

I wonder if your turbo bearings may be going. If you remove the inlet hose and move the blades around there should be very little play. Someone posted awhile back about rebuilding the turbo yourself, it's doable and the parts aren't all that much. Should also be able to tell if the sound is coming from the turbo with your stethoscope. Lift pumps usually making clicking noise before failing.

If you move the compressor wheel on the turbo (after you remove the air ducting from the airbox... ) side to side and up and down... . there should be a little play... . but if you have thrust movement (back and forth along the horizontal plane) then you might look into rebuilding it... . or just going to twin turbos! :D
