I have an auto trans, when I'm in gear I hear a "low range howl" when I'm stopped, when I'm moving I don't hear it, maybe because of the other ambient noises. when in park or neutral it disappears. Strange. Has anyone else experienced this noise?
I have the same thing. I didn't really notice it till this summer came and do more driving with the window down. It is kind of a warbling sound and at first I thought it was the mechanical fuel gauge in my aux tank going up and down with the fuel sloshing. I emptied the tank and still hear the sound. I'm about ready to consult my transmission guy.
It could also be from your universal joints in your driveline, tire wear, or the differentials. Rear Diff's are notorious howlers. There are a lot of variables and possibilities. Good luck determining the cause.
