Attention: TDR Forum Junkies I hate noise problems because they are so hard to describe the sound.
I've got a 98. 5 24v 4x4 5spd, with 70k+ miles on it.
A couple weeks ago while driving home I noticed a noise which only occurs in 5th gear.
Some parts of my commute I'm stuck driving around 40mph and have been able to run in 5th gear in the 1200-1300 rpm range without any problems. I know that's a low rpm, but running empty on level ground the engine has had no problems at this speed.
However, on this one day, I'm driving along and this noise starts. Sort of a cross between a harmonic sound and gasket leak. Not a good description, but it is a noticible sound.
I found that above 1500 rpm the sound goes away, and in lower gears I also can't detect the sound.
I know that something must have happened to make the sound start since I drove about 70k miles without the sound.
Anyone else have this happen?
I'm thinking of going on over a 1k mile trip next weekend and would like to track this sound down before leaving.
