We drove up into a little town in the mountains for an overnight yesterday. It was pretty cold and icy, quite a bit of snow. When I got up this morning it was 15 degrees. Door locks were frozen so I had to walk a couple of blocks to napa and get some lock deicer.

Anyway, I started the truck (started right up just like it was 70 degrees outside) But, when it started, it was making a very loud noise that I thought maybe sounded like some kind of a blower. It kept making the noise all the way to the cafe maybe a mile or so away. But when we came back to the truck after breakfast, the noise was gone. I have no idea what that could have been.

Also, when I firs started the truck, when I first stepped on the brake (truck not moving), the brakes made a very loud sound (not sure how to describe that), but it went away right away.

Any one have an idea what the loud engine noise could have been ? Ive never heard a blown turbo hose before, but it occured to me it could have been that. But, as I said, the noise went away, and I seemed to have plenty of boost.

Fan clutch was frozen???

Would that make a diff on start up when cold ?

Yes, you will get a lot of fan noise(blower like noise) until it frees up. If you want to mess you patties, have one go into 3 cylinder ideal while cold soaked at cold temp long enough to activate that feature. Feature activates at 15 degrees however I found in just over night in Cle Elum it took closer to 5-10 degrees. This is all dependent on the cold weather high ideal feature having been activated on the truck.

SNOKING

Not likely. Mine does it on cold mornings for last three or four years, still running strong.

x2, my clutch is new (Mopar) and it does it. As soon as the engine is warm and you hit some higher rpm it will release and work normal. When cold, the fluid in the clutch is stiff, has a lot of resistance and will spin the fan at high rpm rather than slipping.
