strange sound

I am noticing a strange sort of ticking or pinging sound coming from the bottom of my engine or trans. Only notice it at idle. I got underneath the truck, difinately coming from the lower portion of motor or trans - as the sound can't be heard when listening from under the hood. Not a knock or bang, just a kind of ticking. Anyway, truck drives totally normal. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I have had the same thing since new. Don't have a clue..... sounds like something is loose and rattling, but I only hear it at idle. Wonder if it is a linkage or something... ... ... ...

Hey Dave, is it a sort of ticking sound that you here, kind of intermitent? Mine doesn't seem to do it when cold either, so I don't think it is a rattle, really hard to tell. Almost sounds like an exhaust leak in a gasser, although I don't think it would sound like that on a turbo diesel. Anyway, runs fine, just making me nuts. Anyone else, I don't want to waste my time taking it to the dealer, we know how that goes, especially for bombers. Thanks,

I also just started hearing this noise. I have a 98 12 valve auto. I have recently changed transmission fluid to Amsoil and installed a DTT vb, but I don't believe this would be the problem. My noise seems to change or pause when I shift it from reverse to drive and vice versus. Any ideas out there? Thanks in advance.

ticking noise from under truck

Bringing this back to the top in hopes of some more replies. The sound appears to come and go from day to day. I mainly here it from a stopped position while idling and sometimes it is pretty loud as I can hear it from about 30 feet away with the truck running so it . Any ideas out there?

Mine developed a new sound while on our 5600 mile towing trip. The truck has 18,000 on it. The sound I have is a dull knock, sometimes kind of a tick. To me it sounds like it's in the top of the engine. Hard to hear under the hood, but I hear it inside. It reminds me of lifter noise on a gasser. It runs fine, and no other problems. Just makes me wonder what it is. I'll have a few of our local TDR guys listen and give an opinion when we get together for breakfast in a couple of weeks.
