I have the strangest problem with my '03 2500 4x4 with a 48re. The truck shifts great, cold hot, pulling, whatever. Until... I use reverse, even to back out of a parking spot. If I shift from R to D and then drive away, upshifts are delayed and harsh. If I then stop at a light, shift to P and then back to D, shifts are great again.

I took it to the dealer for a PCM reflash to the newest version, no fix. Then I took it to a local transmission shop, but they claimed they were unable to reproduce it. They drove it with a monitor attached, and they said that everything looked great, pressure good, shift selector, etc.

For now, I just remember to shift R - P - D, but I'd like to solve this. Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum. I had this same issue on my '04 with the 48re at 72,000m. I even felt a vibration in my accelerator while it was in reverse, so I knew the symptoms would be there when I put it in drive. I could also step on the accelerator quick and hard and then it would operate correctly. I took it to several dealers in the DFW area while under warranty. Finally took by Allen Samuels Dodge off I-35 of North Ft. Worth. The service manager took time and let me explain my problem. He had never heard of this issue. I told him about the feed-back in the accelerator and he told me, 'no, that's not possible because the APPS does not receive data, only sends data. ' He did give me prompt attention and found all me diagnosis to be correct. The valve body had a bad solenoid. They replace the VB and all was well. My signature shows I now have a Goerend VB. I thought I had another issue, so I replaced it with one with slightly higher pressures. If yours out of warranty, call Dave Goerend, he is unbelievably helpful.

which solenoid?

that's great news, i was going to put a transgo kit in anyway. i am wondering if your bad solenoid was the governor, overdrive or lockup?
