I just noticed today driving stoplight to stoplight that under heavy throttle what sounds like a high pitched "kazoo" sound long after the turbo has spooled up. It doesn't seem to affect power but I have floored the truck before without this sound.

I searched and found turbo "barking" is this what I am hearing and if so what can I do to fix? From the posts I saw it seems that this just happens to all CTD's under certain conditions?

If it's a "kazoo" sound it would most likely be the silencer X in the middle of the filtered air line, or something in the air box itself. bad air filter?

If its going faster there is a tsb http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2003/23-016-03.htm for a data plate on the radiator support missing rivets. that makes a kazoo sound.

Turbo bark and other noises

Gents,

While pulling 14,000 GVWR of hay for 75 miles, I experienced the kazooo noise while shifting (6 spd). However, when backing off the throttle it would also bark. My mileage was terrible, around 12 mpg when the previousl trip was at 16- 17 mpg. Power also seemed less. Any ideas?

i hear a similar sound when the boost starts getting to the 22+psi mark. i heard it just a bit when stock, but now with the bhaf and torquetube you really hear it.

i think it might just be compressor blades tips starting to get to the supersonic speed threshold... ???

I thought "bark" was only when letting off, like shifting gears. I know if I shift 5th too quick it barks everytime. I have never heard that noise under throttle though.

My turbo had a nice whistle at my max boost of about 22 PSI when I got the truck. I put the Edge boost elbow on and now anything over about 24 or 25 pounds (all the way up to 35, the whistle fades out and it starts to sound like a cross between a kazoo and something getting ready to explode. *smile* I think that's normal though...
