Ok guys I stright pipe my truck again. This time I let on the resinator. Awsome power I can't belive. Alot more sound but no drone like last time without the resinator. I will leave it this was. I also towed this weekend. Had a 35' travel trailer. At 65mph I was reading 16. 4 mpg. I only have 8440 miles on the truck and can't wait until its really broke in.

Yes, that is a CAT. It looks just like the ones from the 12V days.

All I can say is straight piped seems a little loud, once you get used to the quieter motor. With a good 5 inch muffler, it sounds very much like the earlier trucks, to a point.

Get on it, and it makes some real noise.

I just put a DPP system on mine Friday

Do tell Mudder... how do you like it? Does it sound good? How about the fit and finish, especially over the axle and around the spare?

I think these questions may have already been answered about the DPP system, but it never hurts to hear another persons perspective.

The fit was perfect, no problems over the axle or around the spare. All the hangers on the muffler lined right up with the stock monts.

I did have to cut one pipe that was too long but they have since fixed that problem. I also cut back the tail pipe sticking out the side of the truck a little bit. The 5" Stainless tip looks good.

As for sound I was actually expecting it to be louder then it is. At idle their is very little differnce and just a hint louder when cruising down the road. When you put the power to it the noise level goes up and sounds pretty decent (I say decent cause I am use to dual piped big blocks)

Over all I am happy with it and would recomend it. I am tempted to get a muffler eliminator pipe and try it once.

I hear that when you straight pipe these new beasts and add a small race muff,( like a Dynomax bullet) it 's supposed to get rid of the drone some are experiencing. Anyone try this combo yet??

Lost the muffler on my HO yesterday. Although the exhaust sound is somewhat different than my '96, I like it just as well! I believe the sound is very similar to that of the mufflerless Class 8 rigs. The exhaust note still sounds deep like a Cummins Straight 6. I believe the pilot injection on the HPCR is just smoothing out the sound and eliminating the pop pops. I just don't at all believe mine sounds like a gasser. Idling maybe, but certainly not when the pedal is to the metal! To each his own though... ... . If we were all alike, this world would be pretty darn boring!

PCline, considering where you live have you thought about having Rip do it? He runs some nice looking beads and is excellent to work with. For the same money you can have it installed and fully welded from end to end with the muffler of your choice. Just a suggestion.

krabman, I actually don't know where Rip is or what shop he is associated with. I would much rather do business with someone that's relatively local to me. Do you have any contact info?

My exhaust is still a few weeks away. Spending too much money on camper brackets, connectors, and air bags right now.

http://www.protintnw.com/sa-main.htm That would be the front end to his website or -- email address removed -- for email,or Toll free 1 (866) 211-1533. Rip has a steller reputation in the NW and his workmanship is top notch. Hes right across the border in Oregon so no sales tax and the price is as I said the same or lower than most of the kits available on the internet. And that is custum hung however you want it. Want that tip further back, higher, lower, no problem, hangers are made as needed to suit your setup.

Has anybody straight piped a Calif truck while leaving the resonater/cat. converter intact? What was the result as far as noise, drone, and EGT?

I'm looking for a cheap way to reduce EGT at least temporarily until a complete system is in the budget.

I'll get some flak for this but I think they sound like absolute crap (IMHO), kinda like a big ricer. They sound even worse (again, to me) on the dyno - cheap, tinny and w/o any throaty tone like the stock system has. I don't knock anybody for taking this route, I just suggest you hear one for yourself first. Different strokes and all that. Just my $. 02 .

I stright piped mine and left the resinator in. Sound great and lets the turbo spool up quicker. I also went from 16 mpg to 17. 8 mpg

Yes, the guy who started this thread did exactly that! re-read RockJeeps opening post...
