:( I am experiencing a strong odor of exhaust in the cab of my 2004. I don't know if it is the reason for my recent headaches or not, but I suspect it might be.

Has anyone else been having this phenomenon? :{

More than likely your getting a snif of the draft tube. I got about 2500 miles on mine and I still smell it off and on. I just have not got around to extending the draft tube back like I have done on the previous models.

lschultz, I was going to ask the same question as Kornstad, but I will await your reply to him. Thanks for the prompt reply. :)

The draft tube is located on the driver side of the engine, its the clear plastic hose that's the exhaust for the crankcase ventillating system. It dumps straight down, I tried extending it about 4 feet back near the differential but made no difference in the smell of fumes entering the cab, so I ripped it out. I did not want to leave it on because if it kinks or get blocked you can blow an engine seal.

But, try it, maybe you would have more success than I. :D

EX fumes in cab

If you smell EX fumes in the cab and not blow-by fumes, check the

V clamps at the Turbo and the down pipe to the muffler! Only if

you smell EX fumes not blow-by fumes. GWD:)

Air on Recycle??

Put your air on Recylcle. Do you still smell it?? I'll bet you won't. If you still do, I say go to the dealer right away.

I'm second gen, but anytime I got fumes I got leaks. Turbo boot is high suspect. I have ATS header, bolts been backing out causing soot to clog aFe filter really fast. Also, PAC brake bush around actuating rod blowin alittle soot occassionally. Not supposed to have any exhaust exiting affore the tailpipe. Good advice, get it checked fast.

I always suspected health problems from the diesel exhaust. I had sinus problems for years during the colder months when I would drive my 1st generation. I have diesel exhaust smell in my 3rd gen too. I don't think I could tell the diff between exhaust and crankcase fumes. I use the recirculation button when I'm at a stop, but thats a band-aid. Doesn't the cab ventilation draw from in front of the windshield?

On the 03/04 its a black tube that drops down above your front differential. I don't remember the size 3/4,5/8,1". Some just put a short extension of line on it and just extend it straight down. I have around 2500 on it and I still can smell it occasionally. I think you will be able to tell the difference between exhaust fumes and crankcase fumes. If you live in a cold area you might be better off to just extend it straight down. Some oils have more of a odor than others and after awhile you get use to it,:D Its just the character of a diesel engine.

Strong odor

Hey Fellas, Thanks for all the replies. I will check the crank case vent tube, and the clamps at turbo. If I can't find the culprit, I will then have the dealer tech. have a look.

I would assume that something like this is a warranty issue, and if it is, do you have to pay anything to have them look into it?

Like $50. 00 or something like that? I guess that you can tell that I am a stranger to new auto ownership.

Take that thing in and have them look at it I had a good freind die because of an exhaust leak. That is nothing to be left uninspected

Please correct me if I'm wrong the danger is carbon monoxide which is not produced in a diesel in big amounts like gasoline engine.

I also have a 3rd Gen and the exhaust smell in the cab with the defrost on is very annoying! If I am by myself I can usually get away with putting on the re-circ, but with more than one body in the cab it usually fogs up pretty quick.

I regards to being bad for your health, my wife gets headaches easily and usually does when we start taking on fumes at a stop light etc..... so on goes the re-circ. When at work I wear a personal monitor all day, so other than the LEL and H2S there is also a O2 and CO reading and it never goes off in the cab when there are lots of fumes floating around. Diesel exhaust has a pretty rich smell to it, even in small quantities.

My Dealer, when I inquired, more or less said get used to it or go back to a gasser!

If its the draft tube producing the ordor you just have to get use to it.
