Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Struggles to start

My truck began to struggle to start like it wasn't getting quite all the power it needed to turn over the starter. I figured it had to be the batteries. Afterall, they are 8+ year old Optima Red Tops. Since they were so old, I went ahead and replaced both batteries with new Optimas. After installing the new batteries, it still appears to be struggling to start. The engine does start and run well, but I can't image what else it could be causing this starting behavior. Any ideas what else it could be? Any help would be appreciated.

Lots of possibilities, but I would first start with inspecting / cleaning wiring connections at each battery terminal. Inspect condition of the cables (look for green growth in the copper strands). Check the heavy gauge ground wire connections at the engine block. Check the condition of the starter cable.

Remember that just because a connection looks clean and feels tight does not guarantee a good electrical connection. Kind of like looking at the outside of a clean water pipe and shaking it with your hand and thinking, "hey, it looks clean and feels tight - should be flowing lots of water." Unless, of course, it is all plugged up inside.

If everything checks out with wiring, then the starter may need some work. If the truck still has the OEM Nippendenso starter, don't trade it in for a rebuilt starter - keep the OEM starter and have an auto electric shop rebuild that starter. The Nippendenso starter is a quality starter.

Most times this is a cheaper option in the long run! You could pick up a starter to get you through if you need the truck while having the starter rebuilt.

Gentlemen, thank you for your replies, advice and insight! Unfortunately I lost my OEM starter years ago for a referb (that quickly failed....another unbolt and bolt in). Has lasted for a while, but now a new one will be the replacement. Topzide, I appreciate the link to RockAuto! If I had the time to wait I certainly would source it from them. Good to know for future parts needs! Again, thank you both very much for your help. Once I get the starter replaced, I post the results that may be of help to others

Well, the new starter is in and she's starting like a champ again! Thank you all once again. Just a small reminder for those who will be changing out their own starter.....remember to remove the "mounting shim" from the old starter before trying to install the new starter...the new one doesn't mount properly if you forget to transfer the shim before beginning to install the new starter. Please don't ask me how I know.

Before thinking of replacing or rebuilding a starter replace the solenoid contacts with Larry B's heavy duty contacts. The contacts are the main failure on our starters. I replaced mine when my starter began to act up and crank slow. That was 10 years/130k miles ago, still starts great. Starter is original (290K on the truck).
