Hey all! I really need some help or advice, my truck developed a problem back in May, the brakes started pulling to the left, there was a clunk on right turns and there was a squeeking noise on the front passenger side. When I jacked the truck up the front tire just wobbled freely, the nut on the stub shaft had sheered the cotter key and was working it's way off. I took the truck back to a shop that had replaced the ball joints last year, thinking they had stripped the nut reinstalling it, they paid for all the repairs. 5 days later the same thing happened, this time the cotter key we put in stopped the nut from coming off, but it still sheered the shaft of all it's threads. The truck stayed on jack stands for 3 weeks, during this time I found that the caliper was not retracting so I replaced it with a new one. So this time around there is a new stub shaft, new nut, new caliper. Yesterday was the first time I drove her in 3 weeks, I went about a 100 miles, today I jacked it up to check it,AND IT'S DOING IT AGAIN! Wheel is loose again! Anyone have any idea what could be wrong? It's something that causing a force strong enough to strip that stub shaft of it's threads so it's something significant going on. Anything you suggest? No matter how far fetched, the truck may have had an accident on the passenger side, like a T bone, could a crroked frame or I even noticed the passenger side upper axle link is repaired (welded). How bout my wheel and tire? I had it checked for balance and any other deformities, nothing out of the ordinary. Help!

Maybe the unit bearing/ hub going bad?

Are the four bolts holding the hub bearing assy to the spindle tight?

Its about 185 ft. lbs. of torq that is required on the axle nut.

Did they change the stub (short shaft) or just run a thread chaser or die over it? If this is the case, you need a new shaft, lock washer and nut, cause it sounds like its still stripped.

Yes, something's that bent could possibly cause the stripping, but I don't think it would align properly and you would notice something was up when driving the truck.

Go eat some fresh pinnapple and tell me how good it is! :D

Good luck,

Andy

Oh yah! The pineapples are great! Especially the ones that are white inside from Lanai..... excellent! Anyway, I did put a new stub shaft, twice, in fact a 3rd is on it's way. All bolts were torque to specs, so on the passenger side there is a new caliper, stub shaft, castle nut, bearing, and I am also going to change the rotor. If it happens again!?!?!?! I just don't have a clue any more. Thanks for the input Andy... ...

I don't see where you have changed the Hub in your parts list. If the hub was run loose on the axle stub shaft and worn the hub splines you will never get the assembly to stay tight. You need to put a new hub and axle stub shaft on. My . 02 cents

Hope all that fixes your problem. I know your frustration to a degree. My right rear corner keeps falling off! Had been repaired, (welded) when I bought the truck. Fell apart on me under load with my own 5er in Bristol, IN. Had it fixed by a mobile Axle DOC who swore his weld would hold. Well, getting tired of looking in the right rear spot and seeing my duallies leaving the truck. My road angel's working overtime. No load this time and didn't kill myself or anybody else. Truck waiting in line in Great Falls, MT, nothing gonna happen til Tuesday. I decided to bus home to Lakewood, CO for the holiday. Seems this is something that rarely happens to anybody, has happened to me twice. What the hey am I doing wrong? I really baby this thing loaded or MT. Need to decide if I put the 96 F350 CC Dually 2WD back on the road, get a trailer and go get the RAM again and tow it to Colorado for fixin or fix it in Great Falls. Maybe run tag trailers from ID to AB, Canada while the Ram's being fixed. Bus(ses) ride from Great Falls, MT to Lakewood, CO. . . 3 busses and 24 hours. . . what an experience, haven't ridden a bus since I was in the service. My present needs, (1) Complete rear axle, 3. 73, for 99 Ram Dually; (2) cheap rebuilt ZF 5spd transmission for a 96 F350.

Cheers,

Steve J

I hear yah! The frustration level is just about beyond the top of the scale! I'm more frustrated with the fact that it seems to be a hit and/or miss with the solution, but the consequences for the problem could be disasterous, or even deadly for either myself or some innocent motorist. I told my cousin, if that nut completely came off while on the freeway... ..... I'd probably make the 6 o'clock news!
