please help

pulling my camper back from michigan got off the expressway and the truck just went into 4wd i didn't turn the knob and the truck made no unusual noises please help i'm supposed to leave on vacation early in the morning

oh truck is a 2005 quad cab 3500 dually and has 5 inch exhaust, smarty programmer, s&b intake, and a nearly bulletproof trans rebuilt by a friend of mine approx 20,000 miles ago truck has 125,000 mi on it getting my smarty out to read any codes now

smarty says theres no codes but truck has "serv 4wd" warning lite on

4wd switch has dim lites on all 3 settings when the truck is on

at the transfer case theres a motor that controls 2 to 4wd and it has 12 volts on both spades of the connector no matter what position the selector switch is in or whether the key is on or off

really havin a tough time makin sense of this one

put the switch back in and everything back together

removed front drive shaft and thats gonna work for now

i'm kinda thinkin that its the switch

its $27 from the dealer so we'll try that next week

has anyone heard of or seen this before?

fritzcartage, it would seem to me if you dissconected the connector to the motor on the trans case it should go to default mode(which hopefully is 2wd).

Seems you have an open short or the selection switch is bad.

Sorry don't know to much about the 4wd system on 3rd gen.

thanks missouri mule

we did try that it didnt work but on the way home from the shop tonite it made a loud clunk and popped itself out were still going to replace the switch next week

My brother has an 03 that has needed the shift motor replaced at approx every 100,000km(62000miles). He is on the 3rd one now IIRCC.

His symptoms were... ... ... It would shift into 4wd by itself when truck sitting in yard(knob still in 2wd). He had a motor apart and said it is all made of plastic and armature looked like it vibrated indentation into housing.

One was replaced under warranty. . He was running a programmer for the first 300k but has since removed . (not sure of brand). He surmised that possibly the timing increase caused a deeper vibration in engine that euchered the shift motor. Hasn't replace the 3rd one yet but only at about 360000km.

Time will tell I guess.

(old programmer failed on trip from vancouver to Sturgis. Stopped at a rest stop idling the engine suddenly began racing from idle to govenor and back every 2-3sec all on its own. Disconnected and removed programmer and has never had issue again. This was over 2yrs ago)

Steve

sorry i have not posted an update on this but have been busy with work

we put the new switch in but nothing changed it would go in and out of 4wd all by itself

steve thanks for the tip we felt that electric shift motor and it was very hot

we figured that was the problem replaced and all is well

i'm very thankful for all the help i've gotten from you guys it has saved us countless hours of misdiagnosis and thousands of dollars in repairs at the dealer
