Hi guys, maybe one of you fine gentlemen might have an idea what's going on with my 98. 5. Left to run some errands yesterday, while stopped at a light, the chimes came on. The oil pressure gauge read 0 psi. I pulled in a parking lot, checked my oil, it was ok, the oil filter was still hanging there. Closed the hood fired up the engine, oil pressure was back but now the truck just dawdles along. Tried the disconnect the battery trick to no avail. Tried the key on/off x 3, but that doesn't seem to work on this year. Don't have a scanner. Any ideas? Any recommendations on a scanner?

TIA... . Jerry

98. 5, auto, trans, bad comp(new one on the way)...

Jerry I just picked up an OBD II Scanner from Sears for 145+ tax it reads from 94 up all autos. Simple to use and probably the cheapest one they have. I didn't look but, I've heard that Auto Zone, Pep Boys type places have them also.

Thank you, Joe!

Must've been your post where I read about the scanner at Sears... just got back from there with scanner in hand. Now if it'll just quit raining for a little bit... thanks again,

Jerry

Stuck in limp mode

Here's the codes. . some I could clear, some I couldn't. Read the sticky on the codes but could use a little input from someone who is more familiar with these things.

P1693... ... . couldn't clear.

P0237... ... . couldn't clear

P0238... ... . cleared

P0253... ... . cleared

P0234... ... . cleared

P0236... ... . cleared

Haven't tried to drive truck since clearing the codes, figured I better get further information first.

Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Everything except the 1693 is vp44 related (all fuel pump codes). How is your fuel pressure from the lift pump?. Fuel Filter ok?. Do you have a fueling box?.

Stuck in limp mode

Hi Dave,

Waiting on gauges so don't know what the fuel pressure is. There is an Edge comp on the truck, but it's been erratic since new and a replacement is on the way. It's been raining for the last several days so haven't changed the fuel filter as yet, it's sitting in the garage. Hardly used the comp, hope it didn't toast the VP. Knew I shouldn't have pierced the wire! This happened all at once, it wasn't a gradual thing. Any idea why the oil pressure would drop to 0, and then be ok? Just changed the oil and filter. The only thing wrong that I saw was the ground wire on the comp had parted at a connector, which I fixed. Thanks for getting back to me, Dave.

Jerry,

Not sure on the oil although I have seen/heard of the problem that is sporatic. If you haven't already you could return the fuel system back to stock and try starting the truck 3 times (3 successful starts with no faults extinguishes check engine light) although you will still have to use the scanner to remove codes. I had a 253 code that eventually was traced to the box, ran the truck for a week after removing the box and all associated wiring back to stock and no problems. Installed replacement box and still ok. Hope yours is this simple. If you found a bad ground you may have fixed the problem already.

Stuck in Limp Mode..not any more

Installed the new Edge Comp, drove it a little bit, had my power back, was able to clear the codes. Thanks Edge for being so prompt.

98. 5 auto. . 4" exhaust, Comp, trans, running boards and mud flaps. Life is good!

Do a search on oil pressure sending units and you'll have reading material for all night. I would bet that is the problem. Get one at your Cummins dealer and not at the Dodge place. They will want 3 to 4 times the price. You can probably even find the part number with the search or take the old one with you. My 99 pulled the stunt with the oil pressure once.
