2nd Gen 5-speed -- play in throttle, jerking when accelerating from stop

14 2500 in Limp Mode

2016 2500. Wont go over 5mph. Local dealer says they cant fit me in for three weeks. I was able to reset CEL, but not 5mph limit. Anyone know a local shop that can reset this pos?

my 20 finally crapped out on my in Billings... same story from every dealer in the west I got was drive as far as you can see about the next town.. I explained situation to them and they said they could look at it if I left it with them all day,... Crazy that every one is soo busy... Id try to call around but might just tell the service writer to please help you and leave it with them, if its just a CEL clear, maybe they can squeeze it in. Mine was a hard code, but they had enough to know it was a failed EGR and luckily for me they had one on the shelf so in 2h I was fixed and on my way... but back to the beginning , they as every one else said they could not look at it for 3 weeks.. so good luck and keep calling around.

Looks like it's a continous monitor deal.

If I grabbed the right deal, you might need to dump the Def clean the sensor and start new process.

If it's completely the wrong stuff here, I can try to look for something else. Sometime I miss the boat on these things and it's off base.

This come up a lot so you might need to search out some stuff on here.

But a dump, clean the thing up, refill if I'm on the right track might do it.

It is a hard code that will not reset without correcting the issue. If you are under warranty I would call other dealers in the area or Cummins repair facilities, otherwise a local diesel repair shop could be an option.

Thank you for the replies.

After the dealer shot me down. I went out and disconnected the batteries. No joy. I have an Accugauge with me and I was able to reset the CEL, but the 5mph restriction was still active. I called a local diesel shop and they said the would check it out and see if they could get me back on the road. I started the truck and began the long 6 mile journey at 5mph. As I left the hotel driveway the truck accelerated normally and no more warning message. I drove another 4 hours to my destination without any issues. Hopefully it will make it home next week.

When the warning first came on and was counting down the miles, I stopped and put a fresh 2.5g jug of def in. Didn't make any difference at the time.

There was a flash back in June of '17 that addressed some adjustments of the system.

It was in a TSB:

NUMBER:
25-003-17 REV. A
GROUP:
25 - Emissions Control
DATE:
June 24, 2017

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some customers may experience a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination. Upon further investigation, a technician may find the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs):

  • P207F - Reductant Quality Performance.
  • P202C - Reductant Tank Heater Control Circuit High.
  • P203B - Reductant Level Sensor 1 Circuit Performance.
DIAGNOSIS:
Using a Scan Tool (wiTECH) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures available in TechCONNECT, verify all related systems are functioning as designed. If any DTCs or symptom conditions, other than the one listed above is present, record the issues on the repair order and repair as necessary before proceeding further with this bulletin.

If a customer describes the symptom/condition listed above or if the technician finds DTCs, perform the Repair Procedure.

Not a stellar description but your code is listed under that flash.

Also found the sensor is part of the tank so not a quick swap from what I read, also have not heard of alot of tanks being swapped out, other owners might share.

Thanks for the info. The truck doesn't get used much since I retired. This trip was the first time I've run it in three weeks or so. My goal was to run the def down to almost empty before adding new. I'm starting to think maybe the old stuff had something to do with it.

Once I'm home I can mess with it at MY convenience.

Drove home yesterday, 13 hours. no issues.

I'm thinking it was the old DEF combined with over sensitive programming.

Going to call dealer and see about getting flash done. Hopefully it will be covered under emissions warranty. It will be 5 years next month.

Thanks again for the assistance.

Update: Took the truck to the local dealer by me. They told me that since I reset the CEL, and it was working fine they could not fix anything under warranty. I could leave it and they would get to it in a week or two. I showed him the TSB that Timd32 posted above and told them to just perform the update and I would pay for it. Cost me $185 to have the flash done and they only kept it overnight.

Hopefully this doesn't happen again. Next time I plan on doing a trip far from home I will probably siphon out the DEF tank if the stuff is too old and dump in some new before I leave.

Yeah I would have done the same but I do call BS on that since it clearly says.....

"If a customer describes the symptom/condition listed above or if the technician finds DTCs, perform the Repair Procedure."

$185 out the door, not some BS 1 to 2 weeks. I dispise almost all dealers they really get to me at times. I have a tiny fleet of about 30 vehicles, but it really annoys me when they play the games like that.

Most likely it was bad DEF and sloshed or something when you made that one turn and was the issue for that exact moment or even 20 min in time.

Someone posted up alot of info on the DEF deal and how Cummins was able to disable all that crap for emergency vehicles. There was a while I was concerned they actually would let say a EMS rig or Fire Truck to play games with folks lives, was glad to hear common sense prevails and they program the units accordingly not to do the limp mode stuff.

Glad you got back and up running.

Dealers are independent. I would call the number in the Owners Manual for FCA, (Or whatever name they use today  ) and ask them to reimburse you for the flash update cost esp. since it left you stranded awhile.

I paid to have an ignition switch replaced under warranty once as the tech could not duplicate the problem. I took the switch apart in the service manager's office and showed them the burnt contact causing all the weird lights and stuff not working. I got a check back from the dealer as they submitted it to GM.
