Stuck roll pins in 2nd gear (Getrag)

I've removed the blocker ring, as the book calls it, I guess also referred to as a synchro ring from 2nd gear. It's the ring that is secured to the gear by 3 roll pins. To remove, the book says to tap each pin 3/4 the way through the ring, then with a screwdriver pry the ring off 2nd gear. Then with locking pliers pull and discard each roll pin. On 2nd gear, the pin holes are not through like they are in 1st gear. 1st gear is easy, you just tap each pin all the way through the gear. 2nd gear is proving to be difficult for me. I've tried two different pairs of locking pliers, 'Vise grips' and a Craftsman vise grip wannabe. There is enough of each pin to get a bite, but the pliers just pop right off. Is it just my tools? Is there a trick at getting these out?



Also, in 2nd gear, there are 3 other holes that line up with the blocker ring. Almost looks like you could simply tap the 3 old roll pins down into the gear, and then use the other 3 unused holes to tap 3 NEW roll pins into, to secure your new blocker ring... ... ? Has anyone done or tried this? I've talked to Chris and Michael and they were no help:-laf.

sorry I didnt get back to you- los tyour number and didnt think to look into CHristina's phone. Anyway, I'd get a drill and try drilling them out. Maybe an easy out? I know on one of them we did in Chris's shop, I had a devil of a time getting the pin out, and ended up using my 7" Vice Grips and REALLY clamping them down. Pulled and twisted, and popped myself in the jaw when it came loose.

:-laf. . well looks like I'll cut them off flush, tap in a bit and use the other three holes. Just need to get them from my parts getrag.

Make sure the 'grips have good teeth! I have some with smooth tips, and some with teeth on the tip. ( gnurled, crosshatch, grooves, whatever!) Try not to hit yourself in the mouth, it hurts! I don't think you can drill a roll pin, they're pretty hard.

Yeah, them boogers are pretty hard. Even if one could get a bite on it and twist it with a bit, he'd be in a better spot.



Chris has an extry gear as well, I think.
