What is the procedure for tapping the stud holes? Is the purpose just to clean out the threads, or to extend the holes? Anything to be careful with?

Should the studs vary in length extended past the nut when installed, or should all 26 have approximately the same number of threads sticking out?

Should the studs be different lengths to begin with, or all the same?

With ARP studs you should have six studs that are slightly longer then the rest. These go in a row on the exhaust side of the head. I did not tap the holes in mine. With the studs backed out a 1/8 turn from bottom, the nuts only have a couple of threads showing. I would not want to sink the studs any deeper.

Okay, didn't notice that before.

So what's the purpose of tapping the holes? Do you get any extra threads down by doing that (i. e. are you actually cutting the holes deeper?) Or is it just for cleaning the holes out? I didn't have a tap, but used an old head bolt, cut grooves in the threads to make my own tap, but it does not go down as far as the studs do. That's why I am wondering if I should have a longer tap if the purpose is to lenghthen the holes...
