I sold and serviced copiers and fax machines for over 30 years, i am 63 years old and I have never seen a more stupid design for placement and servicing of the fuel filter than on the 6. 7 engine. If this is the best the 'engineers' could come up with, then it's no wonder the DPF system totally Sucks. Chrysler completely deserves any and all expenses due to law suits etc... that may and have been placed. My rant for now... .

Its the same old stuff... manufactures are not interested in serviceability. . or at least its way down on the list. Mission accomplished when you bought the truck, sale was made.

When a consumer sizes up a vehicle for purchase and compares they don't look at serviceability or if they do. . it also is down on the list with the fun stuff first and the oem's know it.

It costs less to have that filter where it is and that's whats on their radar scope.

If the vehicle manufactured cared they would have added an access panel for the filter.

Now on the flip side if it makes you feel any better consider these water pump labor times on the 09 models-

1. 1 hrs for the Cummins vs 6. 4 hrs labor on a Duramax.

Now just to be fair and not pound on GM, consider the 1. 5 hrs water pump labor time on an 09 v6 Impala vs 5. 0 hrs on the 2. 7 v6 Dodge Charger.

The oem's know how to make vehicles serviceable its just not priority.

Well, look on the bright side, if you bought a new Ford you could look forward to removing the cab for some service repairs... .

You might be missing the overall picture... . Cummins builds a turn key package that has to fit several applications... . as an example the 5. 9 is available as a factory order for the F650 and F750 Chassis... . and I assume that soon the 6. 7 will there... . You'll also see some of these engines in Motorhomes on several chassis... .

The manufactures who buy these engines specify a window that the package must fit into... thus some decisions aren't the best, but are made to fit the window needed by the chassis and body builders...

This engine fits well with the Allison on some light chassis for in town trucks. .

I like you don't care for the location of the fuel filter, we have an 08 5500, but we chose to install a 10 micron and a 2 micron on the frame and only service the engine filter every 18 months or so... . for us a better answer and simpler as well as less costly in the long run over the 500K miles we expect to keep the 5500...

I really don't know why you are b----ing about the the filter. I've seen a lot worse. It takes me 10 minutes to change the fuel filter on my truck. There is no need to remove the fender liner. The filter comes out and goes back in the opening above the frame, behind the shock tower.

I take the filter out the top. After draining the fuel, out it comes. Hardly spill a drop, and usually get it done while the motor oil is draining. I find the oil filter more of a pain, as the intake hose need to come off, but still not bad. But I do agree they could make it better if they wanted to. good luck

Rono,

I always thought that the placememnt of the fuel filter was what was making the DPF such a bother!!:-{}

I'll be back in a few minutes..... I'm 45 years old and I'm going over to the 2nd GEN 24V forums to point out how stupid it was that Cummins never offered an OEM lift pump pressure gauge for the VP44's... ... ... ... ... . :-laf

In addition, I have absolutely no problems servicing the fuel filter on my 2007. 5..... maybe you should go pop your head under the hood of a 4th GEN 6. 7L and re-think it.

Greg

They did have a guage, when the lift pump goes out it automatically burns out the vp44, i thought everybody knew that??? The guage is inside the front seat and comes out dry and drills into yurr annus and pocketbook at the same time!!!lol I agree that instead of complaining about the tight location you should really be buying another extra filter and install it remotely, wait until you get water in the fuel and have to buy new injectos made out of stainless steal at $600 each plus a new injection pump as well, piece of money making captialism at it finest!!!!
