A buddy of mine bought a '01 CTD last fall. We were shooting the breeze out at the barn when I mentioned needing to get my oil changed as soon as the weather dried a bit, because my truck didn't fit in the garage. He said me too, "I used 10W-30 Castrol last fall, I'm gonna go to 10W-40 this time". :--)

I said "you need to use a diesel rated oil!" and he gave me that blank stare

he said "why"

I said "because" and returned the blank stare :-laf

Ironically this is the second time this has happened in as many years and I didn't have an answer other than "because" either time.

The best I could do is "I'm sure you didn't hurt it, but probably didn't help it either"

I understand detergent vs. non-detergent oils for sludge and build up, so the best I could pass on was that a diesel rated oil had additional chemicals for soot control not needed in a gasser

I don't need a chemical break down, but I have this guy freaked now ... ... ... . what do y'all think?

You basically got it right... diesel oil is formulated to hold a LOT more "crud" in suspension than a gasoline-rated oil. Diesel oil is also designed to stand up to the much higher compression ratios and combustion chamber pressures that our engines have and experience. Also, diesel oil needs different additives to help neutralize the acids that are formed as a byproduct of diesel fuel combustion (sulphur + oxygen + heat yields sulphur dioxide, and other oxides of sulphur, which combined with H2O [another by-product of combustion] can produce sulphurous and/or sulphuric acid)... sorry, you said no chemical breakdowns... I'll stop :)

And if all else fails, point him to the section of the owner's manual (that he obviously never read) that says he must use an oil carrying the API CH-4 rating (at least I think that was the requirement on the older 24V's)
