Hi my name is Shane Robertson and I am a bonehead...

Putting a new headgasket on and freshly checked out head I get what I think is TDC #1 but I guess I had TDC #6. TDC locating pin was in its hole but I had #6 and bent the pushrods on #1 and one rod on #6. Just stupid on my part. (not alot of experience with heads and a stupid aftermarket manual).

Take it back off and now no indentations in the pistons and the valves look good but still going to get them double checked.

Question is I was at Intermountain Cummins Salt Lake City and when I asked to get the marine gasket they had no listings for marine but when I gave them the marine # it came back as the stock one they use? I have the head off and have TDC #1 (after I bent the rods) and the pistons actually sticks up a bit above the block so now I think I am going to go ahead and get an oversized gasket. But they only show a . 015 and a . 030 over no . 010 or . 020. So I am lost and frustrated.

Please help an idiot in need. (please not to much ridiculing)

Shane

I think they went to using what used to be considered the "marine" head gasket for all applications now because it is a better gasket, and there is no reason to use an inferior gasket. I don't know for sure, but I think I remember hearing that. If you need any help, let me know. My number is 801 556 8082. I work mon-fri 12-9pm, but could help you in the morning or on the weekend. I am hopefully going to ATS saturday morning though. I'll be back the next friday night and I'll be at the dyno meet at the edge products sat. june 15. You gonna be there?

Chris AAYS

Thanks Chris. I am wondering if I should go with the . 015 over. I had my head done at Jack's off of 1700 S. and 215. Seems like a good shop. Speciallizes in Diesel and way cheaper than cummins. Surfaced the head and took off about . 008 so I don't know if the stock gasket will work. But Iwill be down there tomarrow to have Jack check out my head and see what he says and to go to Cummnins to get some pushrods and maybe a gasket.

Is the new stock gasket . 010 over of is it the same as the old ones?

Thanks alot

Shane

I would like to dyno my truck or just see some other guys truck so I will give you a call concerning the 15th.

Embarrased

I feel embarrased. Over a hundred people have read my absolute screw up. (In the words of a great man) DOH!!!

Why can't I learn these painful lessons the easy way? At least on gasser or something not my truck!!!

Shane

Anyone know what a set of pushrods will cost? New head bolts?

I don't know many specifics about the head gaskets. Mebby someone who knows more willl chime in. I hope you show up at the dyno meet; I'd like to see a lot of people there. (now watch me hit another elk or something and miss it :-laf ) I HOPE I have a new ATS transmission so I can give people rides if they want. Clint and the gang are the best. Do you have an auto?

No I am a manual, good oll 5 speed. I like it because it sounds great going through the gears with a straight pipe.

Where is Edge at, 15th is a saturday so I should be able to make it. I would like to dyno my truck, what will it cost? Next on my list after fixing my head is a clutch. I think I want 4" exhaust. Start with a down pipe and have a muffler shop route it back and out in front of the passenger wheel. Thats where it is at now but 3" with 4" tip, only problem is black rim!!! But its loud with 3", not that I mind but the rice burner with there windows down don't like the noise or smoke.

I gotta stop I miss my truck too much!!!!

What should I expect $ wise for pushrods and head bolts?

Shane

The push rods aren't bad..... about 6 bucks if I remember right. If any of the valves are damaged your looking at about 10 bucks a hole. What part # are you using for the head gasket?

-Cord

I think the updated head gasket is the marine version. Try a search, Joe D. just wrote about his within the last few days...

Yup thats the number I have 3804897. Now is this a . 010 over? I talked to cummins and they didn't know. Just wondering because as said before the head is surfaced about . 008. When these thihgs are at TDC they poke above the block.

Shane

At least it won't be too expensive. Pride hurts though. But I am young so I am learning valuable lessons.

Shane,

You said you decked the head and took off . 008 so you don't know if the stock thickness gasket would work. But remember, if you deck the head you will not change your compression (it's flat).

But if you deck the block by . 008 , you will definately need a thicker head gasket.

If you plan on running very high boost, go with a thicker head gasket. I went with a . 020 gasket, but it smokes a lot more when it's cold in the mornings now. My other choice was a . 010 gasket when I bought mine. My personal choice would be a . 015 if it was available.

Garry.

Thanks Gary, I think I am going to stick with what I have stock. I believe it is . 010 over from the original. My max boost is around 36-39. So I am hoping it will hold up okay. Plus I already have it. If I go with a larger one I have to order it and shell out another 70$ or so. I am still not sure.
