2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Sudden increase in Brake pedel travel ??

Every now and then and getting more often My Brake pedel will go almost to the floor before working. It does this a couple times then will be back to normal. Front brakes are good, Just redid the rear ( was doing this before), I have replaced the master cylinder, Booster is working fine, Its not leaking. RWAL has no relays and has not since I have had the truck. Any ideas?? Its amost scary when it does this.

Is your vaccum pump on the way out? If the booster does not get vaccum it will not work properly. Possibly a vaccum leak somewere, in the vent controls, or the front axle. Just a couple of areas to look at.

Already checked vaccum. When there is none the pedal gets real stiff cause of no assist

I am having the same issue. Every now and then the brake pedal gets real soft and goes almost to the floor before the brakes kick in. I have noticed it happens (sometimes) when you accelerate heavy and the let off and lightly hit the breaks to slow down to make a turn. I almost was in a wreck yesterday due to this issue. It doesn't happen very often and It is hard to replicate.



Any sugestions?

Only time I had soft brakes on the Ram I had a wheel brake cylinder go out. Natch I was under a three axle load so I drove through the city using the pinch bar. Late at night and just sat and waited for the shop to open in the morning. Still a scary situation and not recommended by me.

When the cups in the master cylinder are wearing out this will happen. It is time to rebuild or replace.

If you are losing a wheel bearing the out of round rotation of the rotors will cause the wheel cylinder to ride in and out rapidly, which causes the brake fluid to foam. This is also amplified by making turns. You would be feeling a vibration in the steering and hearing the bearings squeak though.

I'd go with the theory that the M-cyl is on it's way. Had same thing happen on my 340 Duster some years back. Got a new M-cyl and all was fine. Tore apart the old one and the wall and piston was scratched, seals were worn too.

The problem Is fixed. Bad front wheel bearing. Just enough run out to push the pads on one side in . It realy did not cause any vibration or noise and usally did this when standing still. It is suprising to see how little the pads need to retrct to get the pedle to go to almost to the floor.
