Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Fuel pressure problem

I have had two instances of sudden hard acceleration. It seems to be WOT and I think the pedal goes away from my foot. It happens so fast and has me reaching for the key to shut the truck down that I am not positive about the pedal. Check engine light comes on and by the time I could get a scan tool on it the light was out but a code 1689 remained. In between the first and second instance, a period of 3 or 4 weeks, I did replace the entire APPS unit. (I had also experienced dead pedal syndrome several times in the past 6 months and had seen a code for the APPS) The most recent time she took off on my I was intown doing about 30 to 40 mph on a city street. The first time I did not have my foot on the pedal and was just idling when it took off. It was chugging missing and running horrible so I went back home about 2 blocks and the following morning drove with no issues until yesterday.

This is the 99 in my sig. 177,000 miles. Short block and stock injectors at 119,000. Also truck will not communicate with DRB III or MAC mentor.

Turbo Terry posted a thread on this a few years back. The thread was titled "Today my truck went to WOT Beware". Sorry, I couldn't make a link out of it.

If the pedal is going down, the apps won't do this - the cruise control will. I remember a recall on some different models of Ford vehicles because of the cruise kicking in by itself even when it was off. You might want to see if there is a recall or TSB about your issue. Until then, pull the fuse for cruise control or even disconnect it from the throttle linkage.

when my lift pump was going out i had two extreme acceleration surges. I was driving at a constant speed not accelerating at all, and it took off for a second or two. It occured both times at speeds above 45 mph.

I have had a fuel pressure gauge since lift pump #2 was installed at 119,000. I have never seen a low reading on fuel pressure. The code it threw was for no communication between the ecm and vp44. The cummins people could not find anything wrong. They did disconnect the electronics connections and they have a tool to insert in the plugs to make sure all pin connections are snug. They put it back together with di-electric grease and now I have gone 60 miles without any problem. They say at 177,000 miles I have exceeded the normal life span of my vp44.
