Can someone tell me the reasons why you cant put an EB on the 2003 48RE. I just had some work done on mine and was told "many owners have done this". I recall that dodge would not support this but why and are there any mods that can be done so that we can utilize an EB. Thanks

AHHHHHH Come in and grace us with your gift of knowledge Great and Mighty Yoda of Transmissions!!!!

Hang on he should be here any minute trany questions are an addiction to him!!

Off the top of my head, here are two reasons: First, there is no capability to lock the converter under deceleration, and second, the transmission does not have sufficient reverse thrust capacity in decel. mode.

I can't speak for a bone stock 03 48re trans but if you have it rebuilt with the intention of putting an exhaust break on it by a knowledgeable rebuilder and get an aftermarket lock-up controller. It will work as I have one with over 100k of exhaust break use. Does it work as flawlessly as the new trucks no not even close does it have the holding power of the new ones yes in the proper situations.

There is no physical or functional reason you cannot use and EB on the 48RE.

Seamless control is not supported, that is the root of the Dodge refusal to support it. If you have a shift kit to raise the pressures and add a BD pressure Loc you should be fine in normal usage. You will have to add controls to the base EB to make it work a little more seamlessly.

The only other potential problem is some thrust washers may suffer wear with entended use of the EB. Its more a usage scenario problem than anything. If you have had it rebuilt that problem may be gone.

Thank You Yoda!! :-laf

I put 209,000 miles on a '98 24 valve auto with a BD exaust brake and now 100,000 on my '05 5.9 and a Pac brake PRXB on it NO transmission problems with either auto! And I pull the 5W see sig
