Has anyone here installed a Summit Racing (mail order) 4"exhaust?

I'm wondering if it is too loud with only the straight-thru muffler it comes with, and if it gives the dreaded drone on the highway.

For $299, its a smokin' deal, just wondering if it's a good system.

Thanks.

I bought a 4" from Jerry (Jardine) for not much more than that and have been very pleased with the system. There have been others who have inquired about the Summitt system and I think there are a few members with them out there. I personally have no experience with it. As for the drone, you're going to likely have it with a straight through muffler. It just depends on how bad it is and if it bothers you or not. I eliminated most of mine by moving the muffler more forward than normal. Others have significatnly reduced or eliminated drone this way as well.

I run the summit exhaust. it is well worth the money IMHO. It is much quieter that a 3" straight pipe and I have not noticed a drone I have been running it ~1 year. .

I installed the Summit 4" exhaust. The low pich drone is more prevalant to me at idle & acceleration than at highway cruise. I also installed the K & N FIPK air filter which has a fairly loud whistle which almost over sounds the exhaust.

Installation was fairly easy- I cut out the old system with a recripricating Dewalt saw in 3 places to save time. It took me about 2 1/2 hours to install by myself.

By the way, DMV made me do a smog to register my truck starting this year- its a new nevada law- maybe just washoe county. Mine passed with no problem. There are only 2 places authorized to do it in Reno.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like summit will get some business.

Reno, I had mine smogged also in Clark County. It was easy. They put it on a wheel dyno, took it thru all 5 gears at 1/2/to 3/4 throttle with a sniffer up the tailpipe. Passed fine.

Asked the dyno guy if heavy mods would fail, he said no, and pointed to numerous bomb'ed Ford's and rams outside and said even the 500HP ones passed.

I am curious about Smogging a diesel. I live in CA. We don't smog diesels... . YET. I want to put a 4" exhaust on my truck. Are you able to pass smog in Nevada without the catalytic converter? Are the smog rules there fairly lenient?

Thanks,

DirtyDodge

When I installed the Summit kit, it came with a muffler & the pipe segments. What I removed appeared to be a resonator & muffler. When I went to smog it, the Tech said that if it had a catyic converter originally installed you must have it to smog certify it. So I presume I didnt have a catylic converter. He told me that it would pass, & it did. So I presume it is pretty lenient. They just want our $34 !

I guess there are certain years that have catylic converters.

Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's the 2nd gen 12 valves that have the catalytic converters.

Mike

You are correct. The 1994 trucks built after 1/1/94 up until the end of the 12 valves in 1998 all had CAT converters.
