Hi,

Has anyone converted there duall rear wheel vehicle to super single tyres? (one wheel in place of two) as the big rigs do ,if so any info would be much apreciated

regards conn

There's a duramax around here that has super singles the same size that they use on big rigs. He had to put a big lift on it to do that.

I always thought a REAL wide single in the back would look sweet. The only drawbacks I can think of are cost and you would need two different spares since they wouldn't be interchangeable any more. The thing is with the cost though, you would only need to buy 2 tires instead of 4 out back, so cost might not be too bad. If I had a dually I would have looked into it along time ago...

There's a reason trucking companies are going to them. And it isn't to spend more money for the heck of it. But like everything else they are debatable reasons.

I have 2 425/65 super singles on alcoa 10 lug hub pilot 22. 5 rims if anyone decides to try it. less than 5,000 miles on 'em

Careful... . those wide super singles are prone to hydroplaning! Even some of the big rigs hauling light loads or deadheading are having to be really careful on wet roads. Snow?... . forgetaboutit!

Does anyone remember the Ford Super Camper Special in the 80s? It had a much larger rear tire than the front. It also had a longer than normal wheel base.

Did I figure right that these tires are around 44" tall? How much lift did you have to go with to fit these tires? How does it ride? I'd love to see some pictures! --Eric

Yes, they are about 44" loaded height. I do not have them on my Ram, they are off a truck i sold. They are available for an even $1000. 00 inc. rims

Super singles don't wear as well.

2 less sidewalls to support the weight.

Have a blowout and you are screwed. Also, not all of the tire shops carry those things. The shop we normally use for the big trucks doesn't carry them in stock. Said they hardly sell any.

A few weeks ago, I heard an O/O on the CB say he had one throw tread, and it cost $1200 to have it changed on the road. Replaced them all with duals after that happened. Also said that for the big rigs, they see the most benefit from having SS tires on the truck AND trailer. Just the tractor or just the trailer, don't waste your money.

The reason companies are doin this is to lighten the truck to increase payload. If you live up in snow country, I would not even sonsider this an option. You can't ride the groove as near as well as you can with duals.

The 22. 5 super single I saw several weeks ago had a carrying capacity of 10,200#s. That is less than twin tires. I also asked the driver of the RV what he did when he had a blowout. He said sit there till he could have one shipped in.

At 10,200# 120psi a tire (445/50 R 22. 5 XDA), that's 20,400# an axle. On my tandem axle Western Star thats 40,800 for the drive axles. I can only legally carry 34,000# on the drives or 17,000# per axle.

The 275/80 R 22. 5 tires on the trailer are rated 6175# single, 5675# dual at 110psi. So that's 22,700# per axle or 45,400# per tandem. Legal limit on non spread axles is 17,000# per axle. Spread axle is 20,000# an axle.

I run the X1 drives at 105psi, my steer tires at 110 psi, and the trailer tires at 95. No need to run any but the steer axle at max psi.

My Star came with the X1's on it. I am still deciding what I'm going to do when it comes time to buy tires. I think duals would suit my type of running better.

CUMMINZ, I wouldn't even consider that a truck, more like a waste of time and money... ;) And too pretty to actually use.
