Fifthwheel or Gooseneck?

When I watched the video that Pullrite sent me on the Superglide I noticed they did not have a tailgate on the truck.

Has anyone had a problem with the back of their pin pox coming in contact with the tailgate when the hitch extends backwards?

On my current set up the back of the hitch box is only 10 inches from the tailgate... ... .

According to the SuperGlide brochure, the hitch moves up to 14", but that would be at a 90 degree jackknife, so the trailer would be off to the side of the bed instead of behind it. I suppose that's one of the advantages to the SuperGlide is that it doen't slide back till you are in a tight turn. With a manual slider, it would be all the way back even when going straight.

I assume that the removed the tailgate so that the hitch would be more visable for the video. It is an interesting video. Watched it with the wife when it arrived. She even understood most of it. They sure had some hot-dog drivers parking the campers.

Not, my wife's response... ... ... . it was more like--"what the h#@* are you watching!"

I assumed the tailgate was off to get a better view also, but still I wondered if anyones hitch ever made contact.

Does the Superglide install kit include the superrails?

I am sure that you will post some information after yours is installed KLenger. Is there a Dodge specifis install kit that "laminates" the frame as as apposed to drilling and "L" brackets?

As always thanks for the great feedback Ken. I better hurry in order to take advantage of the free freight.

Anyone else have experience with the Superglide?

The Dodge installation kit for the Superglide is specific to the vehicle and does indeed include the Super Rails and requires no drilling, except for the holes in the box for the base rail mounting posts. I will be installing one for a friend and I had Pullrite send me the install instructions. I have the PDF file if you would like a copy, please email me and I will send it along. It is rather large at 1M though. I agree with Ken, there is no way for the hitch to contact the tailgate. It doesn't move back until you are turned fairly tight. The one nice thing about the Super Rails is that you can use them with a bed liner. The base rails are completely supported by the posts attached to the frame. No contact with the box itself.

The Superglide uses different brackets than the Superfifth hitches. But the principles are the same.

I have the superglide on a 99 shortbed pulling an Artic Fox 27RL. The day I picked up the 5th wheel, I closed the rear gate after hookup and tried to see how far I could jackknife both, even did it on a slight incline (unintentionally) and all is well. It came in real handy the first time I backed up into a 200 foot hairpin driveway in the dark... . to answer your question, on my 99 shortbed it will tow with the rear tailgate up.

MABurns,

My Superglide is installed on the 2000 truck, also a Quad-Cab, short-bed. When it was newly installed, I hitched up the Avion, which has an angled tongue and maneuvered to ensure everything worked. It did.

One fact convinced me that I should spend the money on the Superglide. If I hit the trailer to the truck just once in my life, I could have paid for the hitch.

Mark,

Mine won't hit the tailgate. I was really glad I had it last August in Colorado, when someone guided me to my campsite the going wrong direction on the one-way road. That meant I had to back the 5th-wheel around an acute angle to get it in the site, so I used the full jack-knife capability of the hitch, with no problems. There were quite a few people watching me do that maneuver, and I was really disappointed not to hear any comments about a short-bed being able to do that :{

Thanks Mark

Your picture in the Readers Rigs of your fifth wheel and truck is nearly identical to mine so, thats good to know.

MABurns - you just missed a sweet deal on a Superglide!

I sold the one I took out of my 2002 right before Christmas. I went with a LWB truck and would've spent another $400 to install the Superglide in my 2004 and get the GN adapter.

As you can see from the pic - I went with the B&W Turnover. I really like it. I wouldn't want it in a SWB though.

What did you end up selling it for? Just curious in case I come across another used one..... Come to think of it..... Anyone planing on getting a LWB 04. 5 that has no "need" for their old Superglide?

I considered the BW with companion but I suspect everyone is right, I NEED the slider.

MA,

Just for info, I sold one last year. It was 2 yrs old and I was asking $1,000. I sold it in short order and had a couple of people standing by hoping the first deal would fall through. The guy that bought it had a Chevy, so he had to buy new frame mount brackets (about $250) so I paid the shipping to IN.

Fireman

BTW I sold it on hitchtrader.com

Sold mine for $1,100 to cover the $1,089 delivered cost of the B&W. Mine was 1 year old and had pulled 6,001 miles.

I'm still waiting for the first person who buys a LWB 04. 5 that decides they don't need the Superglide anymore... ..... other wise I'll need to buy a new one.

Spring is coming... ... even though we got a foot of snow yestarday!
