I was coming home today and smelled diesel. I looked under the hood and the steel (?) line running from the rail to the #5 injector appears to be cracked. Fuel is spraying out of it.

I cannot seem to find the part online. I am probably calling it the wrong name.

Can I change this part? It looks like a matter of taking the old one off and installing another. Am I missing something?

Any ideas where I cam look for one?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You

Andy

Assuming you're talking about the 2004 in your signature...

The Dodge part number you need is: 5086875AB

The price is $40. 71 each at Mopar-Wholesale (a Dodge dealer selling parts on the internet in Florida).

Good luck,

John L.

Wow! Thank you!!

Yes, I am talking about the 2004. Sorry for not clarifying.

I will get on that right now.

I looked at the site and could not figure out how to get to where you found the part. No matter though, I searched on the part number and bam there it was, thank you again.

I hit a bump in the road.

The part came today, I took the old one out and the new one will not fit. It is bent pretty much the same way, it is just longer by an inch. I am wondering if it might be the one for the larger motor, mine is a 5. 9.

JLandry, should you happen to be around and willing, I can PM you my VIN and if you or someone else could help me finding a part, it would be appreciated.

Thank You

Andy

Andy,

That's weird!

I just checked the 2004 parts manual again, and that part number is definitely shown as being for the 5. 9L diesel engine. I wonder if there's a mixup on which part number goes to which injector? There are mistakes in the parts manuals.

Can you check and see if the new injector tube you received matches up to one of the other injector lines? If it does, maybe we can figure out which one you need by process of elimination.

Dumb question, but you are counting the injector positions from the front of the engine (1 is at the front)?

You can download a copy of the Dodge parts manual HERE. Note: The file size is 13. 8 Mb. The injector tube you ordered is on page 419.

You might also try sending a message through your account on the Mopar-Wholesale website explaining what happened and ask for help finding the correct part. They usually respond pretty fast.

Please keep me posted on what you find out.

I looked up the part # on another Mopar parts website, and it is an updated part number/supersede. Odd that the length is long.

I was able to find an IPB online last night and I got the same part number.

I will call the supplier This AM. The bag, which was sealed, had a mopar label which was placed over another label (presumably a Cummins Label). I cannot get the top label off without ripping the label.

Anyway - failure analysis. The bracket the attaches to the middle of the tube, which is most likely a vibration damper, came loose and allowed the whole tube to vibrate.

Thank you for all your help.

Andy

I meant to comment on this earlier. No question is dumb. I was indeed counting from the front of the motor, sort of. I missed the #6 injector way at the back (Note to self, that one would be some bugger to change). So, I counted backwards from what I thought was #6 to #5 (the leaker). I went to a neighborhood mechanic who seems to have "connections". I gave him the bad and the new tubes and asked what he could do for me. He, without seeing the truck, discovered my error, found a #4 injector tube about a 50 mile round trip away, left his shop and got me the tube. I put it in and the truck and it is running fine. When I asked how much I owed him, he handed me his bill for the part, no markup, nothing for his time. Of course, I gave him something for his time and my profuse thanks.

Lessons learned:
1) Be more observant. This is a long term problem for me. I am trying though.
2) The truck had been running funny lately. Strange jerky shifts at low throttle from a stop. All of that seems to be gone now.

Final note - Thank you all for your help. I would not have come through this without it.

Sorry Andy. I almost asked if you were sure it wasn't #4 but I figured you knew what you were talking about. We've never replaced anything but #4's.

I thought i did too. LOL

The local shop guy is an intetesting person. He said that he found that the #4 tube failing is fairly common. He further said that the anodised tubes are the ones that fail. He also saiid that site he read said to only replace them with the silver colored tubes.

I've never noticed anodized or silver. There are several threads on here where I've recommended to all CR owners to carry a #4 line and a wrench in the glove box.
