supporting the cummins for transmission removal?

Well i pulled the pan to upgrade the governor solenoid I found a piece of the od clutch pack retaining ring. So after buttoning it back up and fixing the hunt for 1-2 shift issue.

So now i guess im living on borrowed time so I decided to get the transmission rebuilt and pull it myself. What do you guys do to support the engine and be able to move the truck around??

Ive done plenty of BB mopars and let the exhaust support everything but I'm guessing thats not an option here.

I would try and rent a transmission jack, or with a good floor jack

Supporting the engine without a trans is no problem. Being able to move the truck around afterwards makes it a bit tricker. We pulled the trans from a 1st gen and used a bar across the frame rails and under the bell housing to support it. We even hauled it a 100 miles that way. The bar was real difficult to remove later. The other way would be to support it from the top but you would have to be careful as to not damage the fenders. David

The 3rd gen engines are pretty well centered, they don't drop much with the trans off. If you are realy worried a small chain under the bell housing and over the frame works.

well I pulled it out today without an issue borrowed a transmission jack.... that's the way to do it!! the heck with balancing it on the floor jack!!

and for those guys with two wheel drive trucks there's a support member that you can use a small piece of wood to and support the back of the engine on the edge of the block!!

glad you got it out. that's how we do it at work when pulling out a transmission to replace the clutch in a Detroit you always have to support the engine with a bottle jack.
