I'd like to put a Sure Grip unit in my Dayna 2WD rear end. I've done an 8 3/4 many times, but never a Dayna. What is involved and do you have to remove the rear end and set up the gear lash after the unit is put in? I've had a couple of times when I could use the extra traction. Thanks

Hate to sound slow, but, What is a Sure Grip? Is it a type of locker or is it a friction type LSD?
Auburn makes a great friction LSD but makes the wheels hop in tight turns.

I also would love to have better grip in the back. Does anyone know if a different rearend would fit and if so, from what. Not many people this way work rebuilding rearends so sometimes a different one which would bolt right in may be better. Dana60 from any other model? Thought about getting one of those AIR switches that allow the clutches to lock up but $$ is a factor. Not sure if they work good or not.

preleeguy - Sorry I can't help ya with the information you asked for but maybe someone can. What I can say is that there are other options besides the Sure Grip. Check out Randy's Ring & Pinion Tech Library for information.

Edit: Forgot the url for Randy's http://www.ring-pinion.com/TechLibrary.html

Lil' Dog - Yes Sure Grip is the Dodge Trade Name for a Limited Slip Differential.

NuttyMopar - I don't see why you couldn't find a used rear to throw under there. My 92 4x4 had the Sure Grip but I think it was A Dana 70 series.

Ohh boy. #ad
I have LSD but never called it Sure Grip!!. Had it rebuilt by a Dana Dealer not Mopar and didn't hear that term. Like I said, slow... .

Hi Preeleeguy.

Here is a break down of the "buzz words" for the limited slip (LS) differentials found on Dodge trucks:

The LS in Chrysler built 8 1/4", 8 3/4" (from years gone by) and 9 1/4" rear ends is called "Sure-Grip". Sure-Grip has been Chrysler's LSD trade name for decades (Chrysler had an optional anti-lock braking system on the 1971 Imperial called "Sure-Brake"). The modern version of of this unit is NOT designed to be rebuilt even though the case is in two halves. These rear ends were used on light duty applications-Dakotas and D/W 150's and Light Duty D/W 250's.

The Dana-Spicer model 60 ( 9 3/4" ring gear) LS is called "Trak-Lok". It has 2 pinon gears and can be rebuilt. The clutches are engaged by the action of the pinion gear teeth thrusting the side gears outward. I believe it was used only in the D/W 250 with a manual transmission and gas engine.

The Dana-Spicer model 70 ( 10 1/2" ring gear) LS is called "Power-Lok" (sometimes "Powr-Lok"). It uses 4 pinion gears and is fully rebuildable. The clutches are engaged mostly by the pinion shafts moving up ramps (under load) that are machined into the case.
The Dana 70 is used exclusively in the D/W 250 with diesel engine and all D/W 350's. This is a heavy duty unit and would be my first choice if I did not already have one. I am partial to factory heavy duty stuff.

In theory, you DO NOT have to re-setup the gears with just a differential case change IF you reuse the gears.

For 94-up Dodge uses the Dana 70 in 2500 Diesels with the auto trans. The Dana 80 (11" ring gear) is used in diesel manual trans. 2500's and ALL 3500's. You pay just about $1000 for the auto trans option on a 2500 and get a lighter duty rear end to boot-let the extra profit accrue!

Guess I'm showing my age here with the shur grip term. Should have looked in the service manual for the correct term. I know somehow I need to install an engaging unit to get the desired results. What kind of unit is used?If I read correctly there is a different housing involved? If so, I may as well get a whole new rear end, wheel to wheel. Should be available in the parts yard. Looks like others are in need of this same info. Thanks.

I have an open differential. I had to use 4x4 four times yesterday due to snow and ice in driveways and such. Would a locking rear differential have made a difference?

It will most certainly make a difference, especially in Boston in the wintertime. With the limited slip, you won't have to use 4WD NEARLY as much to get around. Just be sure to take it easy on the throttle and learn how the truck will react with BOTH wheels spinning and you'll do fine, and love it. Well worth the money, and while you're in there (the rear end) you can change ring and pinions to optimize your truck for your personal needs, towing, etc.

Matt-
I had a power-lok unit installed in my 4X4 a few years ago and love it. I run studded tires and can run around in 2wd in the snow with no problem. The best thing about having this type of diff. is being able to climb out of a hole, ditch or over rocks with no slippage. Just have to watch the throttle around corners, especially in winter-This type of differential tends to push you out of a corner if you are on the right vertical pedal.

Hi again Preleeguy.

All you need for the change to a Power-Lok is the differential case (the thing the ring gear bolts to). All other parts are absolutely identical. As I remember you can buy a Power-Lok unit from some 4X4 magazine advertisers (less than $500?). Of course you can get it at Dodge but it may cost over $1000. There are other units available like the Detroit Locker or Air Locker. A Dana 70 rear axle goes for $2500 drum to drum at a local junk yard here in CA.

Just think, when I bought my truck sure grip only cost $315cdn, and the front sway bar cost only $50cdn.
