Having lived with a 2WD non locking differential for almost 21 years now, I have been thinking about changing either the full rear axle assembly or just the 3rd member. Are the parts fairly common in the recycled parts (aka junk yard) department, or is this something that the benefits don't justify the cost and effort? Don't know how many times I have gotten stuck, and a posi would have helped a bunch... . 4WD would be the best, but that's out of the question..... the '06 SLT I just bought has 4WD.

IMHO LS is a no brainer, especially in a diesel pickup. There is another option of a Lockrite, or Spartan locker from Randy's Ring and Pinion. It replaces the spider/side gears in an open diff and makes it a locking diff. I have had both in the front of my 93 and the Lockright was a little smoother IMHO, but both would be good in a rear diff. I probably would not put one in the rear if you towed or hauled heavy with the truck. If its just a toy, then it will be much fun to light up both rear tires, instead of a one legger.

Yes. Very worth it. I did mine a year and a half ago and this winter was fantastic!

Randy's can give you a few options at different price levels.

Wow. Nice truck... . It's probably bring close to that here in Texas, too. People are looking at it as an investment. They know these trucks are realtively trouble free compared to new ones, so they bring a premium, and they know they will last a long time. I've had several people in the last year that had a lot of problems with their new Dodge buy these older 12v trucks for their business, after experimenting with "other" brands and newer Dodges... . They're known for thier fuel mileage and reliability. And these people do beat the snot out of 'em..... Not worth much when they get done with 'em... .

Ummm, HH. What the heck did you do?

This answer pertains to a different thread! :-laf

Dang..... well, it's not the first screw up for the day... . :-laf... let me move that... ...

Now, as for the diff, they are very common in junkyards around the country, but a lot of times they are not taken care of... ... lack of oil, no friction modifier, too many miles, etc. Personally, if it's my personal ride, I'd order a new carrier and install the limited slip diff or locker... . many, many options, there, but IIRC, the Spartan's and Yukon Grizzly's came with limited lifetime warranties..... Randy's is a very good source, IMO, too.
