It must have been about 10 or 11 years ago, my son, wife and I were on our way up the coast to visit relatives in Petaluma and the bay area. My son was about 12 yrs. old and was already an avid surfer, doing tourneys etc... He begged for us to turn off the 101 hwy that cuts over to halfmoon bay, to go check out the break at Mavericks he had read about in Surfer magazine. He read aloud the article to us about Jeff Clark, the "Maverick Man".
We got to the harbor area and asked around where this Mavericks place is. They pointed to the military radar tower on top of a steep hill, and told us to follow a dirt trail between the harbor and the tower and it will take you there. It was drizzling so my wife and I weren't real crazy about hiking down a dirt trail, but Eric convinced us that we must see this wave. We are walking down the trail and get about half way to the rocky beach, when we notice a guy in a wet suit and surf board walking towards us. As he gets closer my son tugs my arm and wispers, thats him, thats the Maverick man,... I ask Eric his name and he says Jeff Clark. So knowing my son would be too shy to say anything, I ask him, hey is your name Jeff Clark and he stops and says yes how did you know?... I told him about the magazine and how we came to see the famous wave, so he tells I'll walk back with you and give you the tour... he tells us how the conditions aren't right today, but it still is a sloppy 10 foot wave. He pointed out where it breaks when it is real big, and the challenges to paddle out and to avoid rocks, etc... he then invited us back to his van where he gave my son a Mavericks T-shirt and a bunch of stickers for his boards. I was very impressed, a super nice guy.
BTW: Eric is a senior at UCSB and on the Surf team, and has been working the past 4 summers as a beach life guard in Malibu.
I'm hoping soon he will find out what real work is like!
Hey Texas Jeff Clark, I notice you drive a Ford... you should ask HVAC about the Cummins/Ford I read about!
