Engine Surge

Hi,

I have a 1999 Ram diesel 2500 4x4 with 108000 miles all original

with no engine or trans. modifications.

I have an engine surge at about 45 mph in overdrive and at about 30 mph when not in overdrive.

The vp44 , the lift pump and the fuel filter have been replaced about two months ago.

Does any one know what might be causing this engine surge.

Right now I don't know if the surge is caused by the engine or the automatic transmission.

Thanks in advance for any help, Eddie

My truck does the same thing. It goes away if i floor it or lift off the throttle. At light throttle it almost starts bucking. Mine has been doing this for a year or so. sorry i am not much help.

Surge with and without OD - Gone

There are many threads about surge with the automatics. Mine just started after 130,000 Klm. I removed the battery cables for about a hour. Cleaned the battery posts and connectors and reset the TPS. The problem is gone, for now. Last words I read on this implied the the problem was electrical. Will be replacing the batteries soon as they are getting tired. :)

I wanted to try the cheap approach before spending more money or time on this. The dealer told my son the this behavior is NORMAL:eek: . Big question is why did it wait this long to become normal:p . I hope this helps.

Try resetting your TPS by disconnecting your battery cables for an hour or so. It may or maynot help. You might have the APPS going bad. I have the same problem, but I thought it was the vp-44 going bad. Had the dealer check, and they found that everything was working good except the TPS had a variation. They said it wasn't enough to change at this time. Of course, it's NOT covered under warranty.

I have had the same problem twice. Each time Chrysler reprogramed the computer . It took 15 minutes and cost $30.

Hope this helps you.

The problem is most likely the electric signal from the pcm to the transmission is being interfered with. As the vehicle ages the wiring picks up interference from other sources. You can see this on any OBDII compliant scanning tool. The biggest are 3rd gear as the trans tries to folow the pcm commands and the clutchs are being rleased many times a second also the lock up command where the trans is told to lock and unlock 100's of time a second. The voltage level transmitted to the trans tells it what to do so even small fluctuations (. 04 vlts) can mess it up. The flash either doesn't work or it doesn't last long. We are testing a new box that appears to stop all these problems and improve trans performance.

Hi,

Thanks a lot telling me about the problem. How does one go about fixing the problem so it don't surge?

Could you tell me more about the box that you are testing, it sounds very interesting.

Thanks, Eddie

Not to stop you from making any purchases but try the battery cable fix first. It costs no money and may "fix" the problem. As posted above, the root of the problem appears to be electrical.

Good luck. :D

Since it appears to be electrical, it there such a thing as an EPS for 12v. DC. ? This is what they use on computers to keep the power constant for AC voltage. Been having this same problem as the rest. Just started when I hit 107,00.

Hi,

I just want to thank all of you for your help. I no longer have that surge. Here is the fix.

1) unhook batts for 30 min

2) hook up batts

3) turn key to the run position, do not start

4) push the go pedal slowly to the floor and back three times

5) turn off key

6) drive truck.

It runs great now.

Thanks, Eddie
