2002, TST, 6spd, banks ex. brake. 70k, Stanadyne All Season Performance Formula.
November, idling problems. Dealer replaced throttle control sensor.
December, truck began to surge. It usually was around 50 to 60 mph. The surge was slight but about every 1 or two seconds. Did not do it all the time. After several days of this I began to lose power. It acted the same as the first time the Throttle position sensor went out except this time I could downshift or something and get power back. I limped it to my next stop and changed the fuel filter there. For the first 10 or 20 miles after that it seemed fine.
Then it started the surging again. The next day it continued and started having the loss of power thing again.
Again I replaced the fuel filter Did not help at all.
Disconnected to chip.
Made it a a big city where I knew the mechanic. He looked at it on a Sunday. Nice Guy.
He suspected the lift pump but could not check it because the shop was closed.
I made it back home. Took it to my local dealer
They did not even check the fuel pressure. They just replaced the lift pump and told me it was fixed.
It still surged.
Went back. They had a mechanic ride with me to listen. He said there is nothing wrong with my truck.
Now it lost power or throttle position again. But it only did it once for about 5 miles and has not done it since. The surging is still there.
Went back to my local dealer and told him the loss of power is still a problem. He seemed kind of mad and said "So I spent $700 on a new lift pump for nothing?" I won't say what I said cause I was kind of ticked they did not check my fuel pressure. He said his problem is that one of his mechanics is on vacation next week for two weeks and he has two exhaust brakes to put on. So I said so we are looking at three weeks? He said ya about that.
I said I would take it out of town. I did not say I will never step foot in that dealer again. But I won't.
Anyway, Called another dealer and they can get me in the day after tomorrow. He already sounds like he is stumped. I just want my truck fixed so I can go back to work.
If I knew what the lift pump pressure was before he replaced it, it may give me a clue to whether it is the injection pump or not.
I have talked to two very good diesel mechanics and I get two different ideas. One says throttle position sensor. The other says injection pump.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
