While pulling my 5er the engine seemed to "surge" slightly three times. The tach needle briefly went up then back down. I was only going about 45-50mph on a flat road.

This happened a couple of times months ago on the highway when empty(65mph).

What is this indicative of? (forgive the ending preposition).

Check your rubber fuel hoses, Filter, fuel strainer for a start. Could be more. I'll let the experts on here answer more.

It sounds like your throttle position sensor (TPS) is dirty or has a poor connection. Do a search for TPS for much info.

I agree with illflem... . my TPS acts up every now and then which caused the TCC to unlock and the RPM's go up and then down as a result.

HTH,

My first guess would be the fuel filter. It's a cheap and easy way to start your trouble shooting. Another possibility is the fuel screen being clogged. I think the screen is part of the fuel pump (I've never cleaned mine!)

tps noise was my problem. i pulled the wires out of the harness back about 2 feet and the problem went away immediately... .
