Ok folks I have a question for the suspension and shock gurus.

I just blew out one of these heavy duty 8400gvw front billstein shocks

(pn BE5-2549. HO). I have a 7 year old 2" Skyjacker leveling kit (spacer and new coil springs). So I have a couple of items to consider:

1) My coil springs are going or gone bad, = too much weight on the shock.

2) I got a bad shock.

3) Did I get the wrong size shocks for my truck with the 2" leveling kit?

I'm thinking these shocks are not meant for the 2" extra, & I should have bought the 5100's in the beginning.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank You.

Robert

I had a similar experience with a stock height shock and 2" leveling kit. over extended the shock too many times and it locked up, opened up the shock and everthing was destroyed inside. was kinda proud of that one.

you can sometimes tell if its getting over extended if the tops are pushed up

as if being stretched out.

Thanks for the fast reply MOtero. I will check out the top, because it does act as if it were over-extended.

Thank you,

Robert

Don't forget:

4) I wore the shock out and enjoyed every minute of it.

Unfortunately, shocks wear out. Depending on how you beat them, it might be sooner or might be later. If you're hard on the 5100s and overheat them, they'll wear out too. I went with rebuildable resevoir shocks all around so the one component that wears out or breaks doesn't break the bank. Oh yeah, they make dirt roads fast and fun as **** too.

Over extending?

Get some limiting straps on there! :--)

Dodge did not design our 2nd gen . suspension for getting air or extreme articulation.

What were they thinking?

Be sure to set your straps at least 1" shorter than full top out.

Oh yeah be sure to make sure you don't bottom the shocks too. Oo.

One more thing!

Coil springs do not last forever :{

My coil springs last about 2 years then they start sagging and become stiff.
